WOODVILLE.

(FROM OUR OWN . CORRESPONDENT.) November 14

The principal object of excitement here has been the flood, although very little damage was done. It was within a few feet of being as high as the flood of 1884, when Mrs McKenzie was drowned. Some of the settlers along .the river bank have lost some cattle, but very few comparatively. In the railway works at tho Gorge a big slip came down at the far end of the first tunnel, just where there was one about twelve months ago. It has taken the whole year to clear that one away, and they had just got the face of the tunnel clear to begin driving. Now they have all their work to go over again, and to an unskilled eye it looks very much as if it will take another twelve months to get it clear again. At Ngaawapururua bridge the water took away a part of the embankment, and it looked aa if there was going to be a dangerous hole in the roadway. However, tho flood just stopped short of doing that, and traffic is still practicable. At Kumeroa the flat part of the settlement was like a small sea, and the settlers had to take refuge, in the schoolhouse. They say tho flood was caused by a settler blocking up one of the creeks, and so caused the water to spread, and it is also stated that they intend to take proceedings against him. A man in the Pahiatua district had to take refuge in a tree from Saturday to Tuesday morning ; he has had enough of.climbing for a while. The weather is now threatening to be bad again, but it is "to be hoped that it will not be as bad as it has been.
