COST OF WORKING THE DESTRUCTOR.

TO THE EDITOR OT THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. gjß,—jpnidly permit mp through the Ujadiuift of ypnr paper, and for general information, to answer a? fa,v aa f can two question# which are being continually put to me (1) What coal will the Destructor require? (2) What will be the cost of working? The Destructor does not require any coal; its essential principle is that everything (not being a mineral) is consumed without any more fuol than that contained in itself, the high ; chimneycausingsuch intense draught that everything is hot to about white heat. As to the cost of working, it is difficult to correctly estimate the amount that will have to be consumed, as there has been no, proper system of collection ; but _ from a careful consideration of phe printed instructions sent out,-I am of opinion that at first two men will be sufficient. Of comse when the quantity increases it yill yequir© znorQinen. Th© cost of workipg would bo two u?pn, say I/IQU a year each. J£ the cremator is used, .cinders or breeze would require to be put in it (the cremator) ; say per annum igr this. As against this has to be put the saying of LIOO per annum now paid for fuel for drying gravel and boiling tar, which the heat from the Destructor would do. The street sweepings when put through will make excellent building sand, which would be worth from LSO to LIOO. a| steel boiler was added, heating of it would be worth at least L 250. I this because the total water-power is 326 effective h.p.; calculated out of this 60 h.p. has to go for street lighting, and of the remaining 26G h.p. it would not be safe to reckon on more than 200 h.p. for private lighting, as this would ©nlv give 2000 16 c.p. lamp?. No doubt the Clincher Company would be glad to avail themselves of steam at a cheap rate. As between the cost of taking all refuse to Lyell Bay and putting it in the Destructor, I-estimate that a saving in cartatro would be made of not less than LIOOO per annum; It would stand thus - ... COST OV WORKING DESTRUCTOR'. . T) r ; .ft • •> *' H ! -’To two men, each £IOO ... ••• i f y cinders or breeze for cremation, say -50 ’ ’ ’ £250 By saving in fuel for boiling tar, &c £IOQ ',, building sand from furnaces ... 50 , hcatjng of bqiler ... - ••• „ saving of cartage, at least ... 1000 Cost of working, £250. Saving, £I4OO

The saving which the Destructor would effect will be belter understood when I say that in Dunedin it only costs L4OO to collect from the whole city, or Is 9d per house per annum, which the City Surveyor estimates, would do the work that under our present arrangements would cost L 2500. I and those who supported me went in for the Destructor in the full conviction that we were providing, not onlv a better, but a cheaper sanitary arrangement.-: —I am, AjC., Samuel Brown.
