Trump Card was sold at auction for £l5O the other day. Mitrailleuse was sold to Mr D. S. Wallace for £520 the other day. Dunlop has broken down. I hear that the purchaser of Kangaroo is the gentleman who owns Sylph. Icenian, the hurdle racer, got lamed at the Otago Hunt Club’s Meeting, and will not race for some little time. Cinderella was backed to win £2OOO in the Rosehill Handicap, which she won easily. It is reckoned that since Mr Benzon came in for his coin, says an exchange, it has ‘ vanished ’ at the average rata of a thousand a day. The World says that the sensation of the week at Goodwood, apart from the weather and the downfall of so ■ many favourities, was tho collapse of the gentleman who has for the last year or so been known a 3 the * Jubilße Juggins.’ The ring would only bet with him in ready money at Sandown, and as he had failed to settle his differences, amounting to £I4OO, last Monday, he was refused admission to the ring on Tuesday, and his horse Castor was not allowed to run for the opening race. AU his horses in training are to be sold very shortly ; and the calculation is that lie has got through about a thousand A day, Sundays excluder!, since he took to racing, though I hear that he has lost more money at cards than on the turf. A recent number of Stabb’s Gazette informed its readers that Ernest Benzon, of 172 New Bond street, had executed a bill of sale on July 26 last to Alexander Sargant Cochrane, bill discounter, of 4 Waterloo place, S.W., for £IO,OOO, upon seventeen racehorses. It appears that the ‘ Jubilee Juggins ’ was indebted to Mr Cochrane in £7575 odd, and in considers, tion of a further advance of £2425 agreed to seoure the principal sum of £IO,OOO and in. terest at 60 per cent. If either Abereorn or Australian Peer had come a year earlier or later, the other one wonld have had a rare good time last season. As showing the closeness of the contests between these two three-year-old’s last season I append a list of Australian Peer’s performances :
At 3 yrs—Randwick Spring : third in Derby, mile, Bsfc 101 b, won by Abereorn, Bst 101 b ; second in Maiden Stakes, 1 \ mile, 7st 91b, won by Cranbroob, 7st 91b ; won Randwick Plate, 3 miles, 6st 121 b, smin 50J sec, Trident, 9st second, Aberdeen 6st 121 b, third. Flemington Spring : won Derby, 1J mile, Bat 101 b, 2min 40sec, Abereorn, Sat 101 b, and Niagara, Bst 101 b, dead heat for second ; third in Melbourne Cup, 2 miles, 7st 51b, won by Dunlop, §3t 31b; won Canterbury Stakes, miles, 7st 31b, 4min 45secs. Abereorn, 7st 41b, second, Dunlop 9st 61b, third. Flemington Autumn : second in Leger, If mile 132 yards, Bst 101 b, won by Abereorn, Bat 101 b ; nowhere in Australian Cup, 2£ miles, Bst Sib, won by Carlyon, Bst 21b. Randwick Autumn : second in Leger, If mile, Bst 101 b, won by Abereorn, 8Btl01b; won Sydney Cup, 2 miles, Bst 61b, 3min 32 sec, Algerian, Bst 21b, second, Acme, Bst 81b, third ; won Cumberland Stakes, 2 miles, Bst 21b, 3min 36|sec, Abereorn, Bst 21b, second, Arsenal, 9st 4lb, third ; second in A. J.C. Plate, 3 miles, Sst, won by Abereorn, Bst.
Mr James White’s' only winner so far is Ensign, who has won for him the Wycombe Stakes and Trial Stakes. Ensign is by Paymaster —Formosa.
Mr Cannon’s fourth string Wycombe, by Maribyrnong—Guelder Rose, won the Randwick Plate for him on Saturday, having previously won the spring Maiden Stakes, and Second Foal Stakes. With Arsenal, Australian Peer, Melos and Wycombe, Mr Gannon ought to cut a big figure in the pre-
sent Australian season. Another of his horses, Merriment, won the Hobartvillo Plate at Rosehill tho other day. The mare Lady Artist, by Painter —Policy, has been sold to Messrs Baker and Co., for £6O, and will visit Somnus.
At Gisborne the other day, Renga (dam of Cinderella) was sold to the Stud Company for 37 guineas, and Aconite to the eame purchasers at 29 guineas.
The three-year-olds had much the best of the Spring Handicap at Napier on Tuesday last, Leopold aud Manton getting into the two first places, while Mr Campion’s new purchase, Jot d’Eau was fourth. The time, 2min 44sec, was tolerably good considering the state of the weather. Leopold has been the possessor of a pretty big reputation for some time, and looking at his performances at the Hawkes meeting I should soy there is only a very little between him and Manton. In the Guineas, where the weights were equal, Manton won, but in the Handicap, where their weights wore on a lower scale and Manton had to ooucede 61bs, Leopold had a bit the best of it. Therefore, I should say that at even weights Mr Butler’s colt is a shade the best. Dndu, who was rather fancied in Wellington, does not appear to have been in it, though Mr Keith had a look in on the first day by winning the Flying with Escapade—who, if the time given (lmin 16sec) is correct, is even better over six furlongs than we generally thought him to be. The well-bred Cuirassier, full mother to Trenton, ran second in the Guineas, and consequently has yet to prove his mettle. Mr F. Martin, of this city, scored a win with his recent purchase Kangaroo in the second hurdle race ; and in tho Scurry Stakes with Sylph. THE ROUS MEMORIAL STAKES. By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (special to press association.) London, September 28. The Rous Memorial Stakes, of 15 sova each, with 500 sovs addtd, for two-year-olds. was run to-day at Newmarket, with the following reault:— Laureate, 1 ; Gulliver and Gagoul dead heat for second. A.J.C. MEETING.—THIRD DAY. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, September 27. The weather was fire for the third day’s racing of the A.J. Club, and the attendance fair. Second Hurdles, two miles.— Cellarmar, 1 ; Sir Launcelot, 2 ; Bellringer, 3. Eleven started. Won easily. Time, 3min sGsec. The Craven Plate, one milo and a quarter. Abereorn ... ... (Hales) 1 Australian Peer ... (Power) 2 The Queen ... ... (Gough) 3 Betting was even money on Australian Peer, 2 to 1 agst Abereorn, 4 to 1 agst 'The Queen. Australian Peer jumped away with the lead, which he maintained until reach, ing the straight, with The Queen close up. At she distance post Hales brought up Abereorn with a great rush, and catching the favourite in the last few stridos, won by a short neck. Time, 2min 19£sec. The Suburban Handicap, seven furlongs. Tilbnrn and Newmarket, dead heat ; Romany Rennie, 3. Time, lmin 31sec. The Second Foal Stakes, one mile and a quarter. —Wycombe, 1 ; DilisW, 2 ; Boonie Spec, 3. Pearlshell also started. The Sydney Handicap, one mile and a half.—Simon and Invader, dead hoat ; Leichardt, 3. In the run off Invader won easily. The dead heat between Tilbnrn and Newmarket in the Suburban Handicap was run off later in the day, when Newmarket won. Sydney, September 29. The fourth and last day’s racing of the A.J.C. Spring Meeting took place to-day. The weather was fine and the attendance was again very good. The Selling Plate ; seven furlongs.— Here’s Luck, 1 ; Ascot, 2; Butterfly, 3. Won easily. Time, lmin 30sec. The Members' Handicap ; one mile and a furlong.—Maggie, I; Dilisb, 2 ; Savant, 3. Won with a little in hand. Time, lmin 58£oee. The Steeplechase, about three miles.— Marmion, 1 ; Scobeloff, 2; Last King, 3. Nine started. This was a grand race, the placed horses entering the straight together, but Marmion had the best of tho struggle in the last fifty yards, and won by threequarters of a length from Scobeloff, who beat Last King by a head for second position. Postal fell in the straight, and was so severely injured that it was found necessary to destroy the horse. The jockey escaped unhurt. Time, 7min 17sec. The Wave rley Handicap, one and three, quarter miles.—Theorist, 1; Invader, 2 ; Phaon, 3. Won easily. Time, 3min llsec. The Randwick Plate, three miles.— Wycombe, 1 ; Abereorn, 2; The Australian Peer, 3. Wycombe was taken to the front at the start, and was never headed, winning by four lengths. When fairly in the straight Australian Peer appeared to have the best of Abereorn, but he lost a lot of ground by swerving at a critical time and allowed the son of Chester to secure second honours. Time, 6min 47£sec. The Final Handicap, one mile and a quarter. —Keith, 1 ; Stockwell, 2 ; Busy Bee, 3. Won by two lengths. Sydney, October 1.
Tho Nun, her owner, and jockey, have been disqualified during pleasure for suspicious running in the Sydney Handicap on Thursday. „ ~ , , , Arrived—Hauroto. Carbine waa landed in excellent condition. Sydney, October 3. Carbine, when exercising on the Randwick course to-day, finished lame. Sub-
sequently, however, the lameness appeared to wear off. Melbourne, October 1. Dick Swiveller won the big race at the Moonee Valley meeting on Saturday, which has brought him into favour for tho Caulfield Cup, in which he is weighted at Bat. Three thousand to one hundred and fifty has been taken about his chance. Outside this there is little betting. No work was done thin morning. The Flemington tracks are in splendid order, and good work may be looked for to-morrow. In consequence of rumours to the effect that Montor is an unlucky starter for the Caulfield Cup, a disposition is evinced to knock him out of the betting. Several hundreds to one were offered aud accepted about him to-day. Waterman has been scratched or. both cups. Melbourne, October 2. _ The latest betting on the, Caulfield Cup is 100 to 7 agst The Charmer, 100 to 6 Vic* tory and Chicago, 100 to 5 Enfilade, and 100 to 4 Talcoon. Carbine and Melos are equal favourities for V.R.C. Derby, and 3 to 1 agJt either is taken and offered. 100 to 15 has been accepted about Easign’s chance, and 100 to 8 about Lady Betty. For the Melbourne Cup, Ensign is firm at 100 to 7 ; Malua, 100 to 6 ; Touchstone and Australian Peer, 100 to 4; Mentor and Whakawai, 100 to 3.
Carbine is expected to arrive at Flemington to-day. A large number of horses were on the track this morning. Chicago was sent two miles on the tan, finishing the last mile in lmin 54seo. His going did not please the touts, as he appeared to move short. Beryl ran over Redbourne in a mile and a half spin on the sand. The daughter of Musket and Onyx moved very freely, and is in splendid fettle. Mentor held Enfilade safe in a gallop once round the tan, which was traversed in lmin 524 sec. Dick Swiveller was sent a similar distance, which he ran in lmin 55£sec. Pakeka left five furlongs behind in lmin ssec.
The Australian Jockey Club’s disqualification of The Nun for suspicious riding at Sydney was endorsed by the Committee of the Victorian Racing Club to-day. Mentor has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. Melbourne, October 3. Plutarch has been introduced into the Caulfield Cup betting, aud 100 to 6 i 3 the best price that can ba obtained about him. Enfilade and Talcoon have been suppoited at 100 to 5, and the same price is still on offer against either. Tradition is quoted at 100 to 4, and Victory at 100 to 3 ; 100 to 6 is being freely taken about Cardigan’s chance for the Melbourne Cup. The V.R.C, Derby is a dead letter ; 5 to 2 is offered on the field.
This was an off morning at Flemington, and operations were not of an important character. Chicago, Beryl, and Redbourne put in good strong work. Whakawai will not start in the Caulfield Cup, as he is being reserved for the principal event at the V.R.C. meeting.

Odds and .Ends. Woolf Bendoff, the English boxer, has arrived in Australia, and has issued a challenge to fight anybody for from £2OO to £IOOO. . _ „ At the Championship meeting of the New South Wales Cycling Union the other day* the mile amateur bicycle championship was •won by T. P. Jenkins, in 3inin sseo. Jenkios also won the mile invitation race. The ten mile amateur championship of Aus, tralia fell to T, W. Busst, the Victorian, who beat Jenkins by 20 yds after a grand race. Time (best on record in Australia) 32min 56 l-sseo. A record was also made for the first five miles, which was done in 16min 25sec. A gang of roughs met with a surprise reception in America a short time since (says an exchange). They were bent on (to use classic lore) ‘cracking a crib,’ the said crib being a boarding-house. After considerable trouble an entrance was effected, and the intrudeis were right loyally’ received by Jack Dempsey (America’s middleweight champion), who happened to be a boarder, and several other of the inmates. Jack and his * pals ’ barred using more deadly weapons than ‘raw ’uns,’- with which they, at a given signal, opened fire, the result being almost a record in the way to! skittles, ninepins never'falling more simultaneously than did the would-be burglars. After partaking of a severe doing they were allowed to‘get.’ Cuningham, the boxer, who was defeated bv Laing some time ago, has returned to Wellington from Australia, and will probably. endeavour to arrange another match with Laing.
