A LICENSING CASE.

TO THIt EDITOR' OE THE HEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —I was-very much surprised, as well as grieved,- to see that, although name was not mentioned, the hon member for tho Hutt District had taken occasion to refer to myself and the wisdom of my decision. Now, taking into consideration the fact that the hon gentleman was the advocate for the person whose license was refused, I may be showing a further lack of wisdom, but in my Bimple way of looking at it, if we acted unlawfully in the matter, the law should be appeals, d to to set it right (I am a lover and an honorer of the law, and would on no account willingly break it) instead of taking up the time of tho House, and, to my mind, lowering its dignity. In reference to the wisdom of our decision, it is possible to measure it by another standard than the hon gentleman’s. lam not ashamed of the motives which prompted me, and the experience and judgment which guided me in arriving at that decision. And I do think that if the hon gentleman had kept a golden silence instead of giving utterance to his two last speeches, he would have stood a little higher in the opinion of some people. I am sorry for the hon for he had evidently sat on something that made him feel very uneasy in his seat to cause him to rise-in ,the House about such a subject.—lam, &c., W. H. Cook, Chairman of Pitone Licensing Bench, and a free and independent elector.
