Odds and Ends.

The following peculiar remarks are made by a Wanganui paper on the relations of Laing and Slavic : —Slavin has flatly denied that his backer, Mr Riley, left the course during the second round of his set-to with Laing. He says that Mr Riley remained with him till the conclusion of the battle, then accompanied him to the dressing room, after which he left for town for the purpose of telegraphing the result to Wellington and Melbourne. After that Slavin will say anything ! 1 expect that he will also deny the fact that Laing called upon him in the evening after the contest, and offered to fight him with ‘ raw ’uus ’ there and then for £59, or meet him iu a week’s time, under Queensbury rules, for £SOO a-side. Slavin’s contemplated engagement with Burke was the excuse this time for the non-acceptance of Laing’s challenge ; but I believe his backers were dubious about putting up any more money on him, as his exhibition in the afternoon did not warrant much confidence being placed in him, providing Laing was fit andjwell. * If this is true, it is to be hoped that Laing will endeavour to have a ‘go ’ with the Queens

lauder. Slavin came over here and won our dollars, and would have * had ’ Colonel Riley, perhaps, if it had been possible for mortal man to do so. That we can put up with, but if we’ve got a man who can lick him, why, let’s have a match. Albert Hamm says:— ‘ Teemer can boat any man in the world, and is to-day ten boatlengths faster than Beach over was over a three-mile course. As to Kemp, Teemer is a better man, and I am in hopes that he will be induced to come to San ’Francisco and meet John.’ ' . ,

Opinions of Hanlan’s defeat by Kemp : We do not believe that Haulan was sober when ho met Kemp in the colonies last week ; nor do we believe that Kemp is anything more than a very second-rate man. The world’s champion is in America, and his name is John Teemer.—San Francisco News Letter. A prominent rowing man in Toronto attributes Hanlan’s defeat by Kemp iu Australia to three things: ‘Partly to want of nervo and lack of application, partly to the climate, and partly to the need of a good, staunch, sturdy friend behind him who could strengthen his backbone and quicken his heart whenever the pinch came.’ Albert Hamm : If Hanlan keeps on he will bankrupt tho entire Yankee nation. It would not surprise me after this if Trickett, who has a match with Hanlan, will beat him, with all his 42 pounds of superfluous flesh. Their race will be rowed next June. Teemer will row Kemp on almost any terms, and you just say that Teemer an’d I will go to Australia if we have to work our passage. ’ f

An auction of Mr Benzon’s horses in training occupied the morning of one day of the Kempton Park Meeting, and those that were sold realised on the whole good prices. It was perhaps more of a weeding out than a sale (says The Field), but that wa3 to be expected. The gems of the lot, Hazelmere and Barkhnm, though 3000 guineas each were bid for them, were bought in, They, are charming looking young ones, both of them, and ought to carry Mr Benzon’s colors this year in the van. The sale total was 12,410 guineas. Kingwood did not reach the reserve price put upon him. Teemer told au American reporter he would start for Australia about the first of August.

A match for the professional racquet championship of England and 500 dol. a side was played in London, April 25, P. Latham, champion, beating W. Gray by 4 games to 1. Gray won the first game, but lost all the rest. The fourth game was most, closely contested, and wa3 set at 3 to 13 all during the last game. Latham scored 11 of 15 by service.

Howell (England) defeated Lowe, the American, in the second of their three bicycle contests; as the Englishman also won the first he takes the cake. Kilraiu is willing to fight Sullivan, and will insist on the whole oE the stake money being put up when articles are signed. By Electric Telegraph—Cofyright. (SPECIAL TO PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
