WRECK OF THE S.S. GERDA. Information was received in town on Saturday morning that the steamer Gerda had been wrecked at Greymouth. She had been trading to that port in the coal trade for the past eighteen months under charter to Mr H. Guthrie of Dunedin, Messrs Cottrell and Young, of this city, being the W ellington agents. She left here for Greymouth on Thursday last. She took no passengers, and

had only the following cargo ; —lO drums oil, 1 parcel, 2 kegs powder, shipped by E. W. Mills to J. and A. Anderson ; 4 cases oranges, G. Thomas and Co. to H. Thomas ; 1 keg butter, G. Campbell io R. Oxley ; 3 cases, Sharland and Co. to Elson ; 40 kegs nails, 5 crates ranges, 4 cases pick handles, 3 cases sledge handles, 1 case adze handles, 1 case brooms, Virtue and Patersou to J. Renton.

The Gerda was an iron screw steamer of 340 tons net and 532 tons gross register, Her length was 160 ft 6in ; breadth, 25ft Gin ; depth, 13ft 2in. Her engines were 60 horse power nominal. She was built at Flensburg in 1883 by the Flensburg Steamship Company, and owned by H. Scheldt: Captain Erickson was in charge. It is believed that she was insured in Home offices, but the amount is not known. She wa3 valued by her owner at £II,OOO. The mails on board were, by the exertions of the captain, landed in safety.

PARTICULARS OF THE WRECK.

(PER press association.) Greymouth, June 23,

The steamer Gerda, in coming in at an early hour this morning empty from Wei. lington, encountered a very heavy sea outside the bar, aud was thrown on the north breakwater. Her back is broken, the funnel is gone, the mast has disappeared, and she lies a helpless wreck. Considerable damage has been done to the staging of the breakwater, several rows of piles being injured and the derrick gone. When the Gerda was coming in this morning, shortly after 3 o’clock, a strong southwest wind was blowing with a heavy sea at the time, which had the effect of setting her on the north breakwater. The Gerda has not been taking the tug lately ; at nnyrate this morning Captain Erickson did not take the tug. When corning inside the two breakwaters, flying light, she was caught on the top of a heavy sea and thrown against Hungerford and McKay’s staging, crashing through eight bays about 200 ft in length, where she now lies wedged in fast. She carried away the donkey engine, a derriok, monkey, and other appliances. No casualty ccurred, all hands being able to walk ashore, from the ship by the staging. It is understood she is full insured in German offices. June 24.

The Gerda is one of the most oomplete wrecks possible to see. She has utterly destroyed eleven bays of the North Breakwater; and the work is now no further forward than it was about twelve months ago, after a big flood. There are three rows of piles and a railway track. All are torn away and disappeared. A length of 250 ft is now altogether destroyed, the loss to Hungerford and McKay being over £2OOO. This was Captain Erickson’s last trip, as he intended going to Germany after this. The harbormaster, who saw the accident, attributes it to the vessel not answering her helm properly. The wind, he says, was not heavy, and che sea not exceptionally, heavy. There was plenty of water on- the bar, and the signal was given that the bar was safe. The vessel was in between the two pier heads and very close to the south mole, when the helm not answering through her bow being down and stern on to the sea, she was canted to the northward, and the sea coming up, canted her still further northward so that she took the ground, and was soon on the north works. An eye witness says that the wind was not strong, but the sea was rather high. On seeing her coming in he apprehended some difficulty with her, although very close to the south wall. He considers that the strong sea lifted her on to the north wall, to which she floated quite close without striking. After she out down the first three bays of piles, where no stones had been deposited, she gradually worked shoreward until 11 bays were destroyed. Their iron rails are now twisted about her as if so much telegraph wire. The crew and officers got all their effects ashore. The stern is standing high up, and her cargo (about 20 tons) is not much damaged, but the bottom of the vessel is as full of holes as a colander. If she hud been a few yards further north she could be launched again. • Later. Very little of the Gerda is visible now. From her forepart the vessel is breaking up by the action of the waves.
