ON RETRENCHMENT.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, June 22.
Tbo New Zealand Heralil refers to the work of the “ aelf appoiate/l Retrenchment Committee which has been doing most valu able service in Wellington by carefully inVeßti‘<ating the causes of extravagance and aeekiDg the means of escape from it in the Civil! Service.” A leader on the subject closes as follows : the exception of a few, raetnhers of the Legislature have succumbed to - the mephetic influence of bureaucracy at /Wellington,; for they placidly accept the position that further retrenchment is impossible. The voice of the: country should declare that, further retrench . ment is imperative, and we sincerely* trust that not only in Auckland, but in every city and hamlet of New Zealand, public meetings will ' emphatically declare tliat the spirit which Beeriis to regard New Zealand a 3 existing for the benefit of those who are fattening on the public expenditure shall no longer prevail ; that the cost of administration — even on a retrenched scale —is v> rong to the taxpayer arid a disgrace to .the Colony in its present financial .-condition ; that 1 expenditure must be cut - down to -the revenue, rather; than the revenue bo raised up to the expenditure, and that the members of Parliament ; and the -' Ministers who confess. themselves incompetent to effect this further and more drastic retrenchment, must stand aside, and give place to those, who will.”
