COMMERCIAL NEWS

' The Customs duties collected at _ the port ofSYVellington for the week ending Saturday amounted to £2307 Ss 9d. Beer duty, £9O 2s 3d. : ••

George Thomas and Co. report produce prices as follows : —The upward tendency noted during the past few weeks in oats has culminated in a strong advance of to 2d per bushel; the demand for Sydney and Melbourne is very great, and it is to this factor that the increase in values may be traced. There are also general inquiries from the same markets for prime salt butter, which has every appearance of being good stock to holders who have already concluded purchases. Best qualities in cheese are firm at advance on last reports. Already the effect of the prohibitory tariff may be noted in the greatly diminished quantities contained in the usual weekly consignments of fruit, shippers of Tasmanian apples and pears preferring to drop New Zealand in favor of increased exports to Sydney. There is every prospect of high prices ruling for these lines in the near future, as at present the local growers cannot at all meet trade demands. We quote : —Flour, £8 10s to £9; bran, £3 103 ; pollard, £4 ; fowls' wheat, 2s fid to 2s lOd ; short oats, 2s 3d ; long do, Is llid to 2s ; oatmeal, £9 10s to £10; chaff, £2 15s and £4; feed barley, 2a 9d to 2s lOd; beans, 3s 6d ; peas, 3s 3d to 3s 6d ; garden do, 7s ; carrots, £2 10s ; Derwent potatoes, £2 10s to £2 15s ; Bath and Lapstone kidney seed, £5 per ton ; rye grass seed, 3s 6d ; Italian rye, 3s 6d ; cocksfoot, 3£d ; maize, 3s 9d to 3s lOd ; pearl barley, 22s 6d ; split peas, lss; cheese, 4-id ; fresh butter, Is; salt do, Sd ; hams and bacon (uew cure), 7id; lard, 3-Jd ; honey, 4d in large and sfi in small tins ; turkeys, 7s 6d ; ducks, 3s 6d ; geese, 6s ; and fowls, 2s fid to 2a 9d per pair. In anticipation of an increase in the duty of certain articles large clearances were made. By some moans the information had leaked out of what goods would be advanced, notably tea, salt, and matches. In these lines large clearances were made by some of the leading merchants. Until the new t-iriff is finally settled business will be quiet, and not much beyond sorting up orders will be given. A good deal of tea has changod hands during the mouth ; and the rumor that the next China crop in certain districts will be considerably under the average has strengthened speculation. A good fair business has been done in sugars at fully late -prices. Fruits are without change, and the prices paid are not very satisfactory to holders.
