LOCAL BODIES AND CHARITABLE ACT.
[By Telegraph]
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) , Masterton, May 1. A meeting of delegates from the local bodies in the Wairarapa liable to contributetoward the United District Charitable Aid Board was held here to-day, Mr T. Mackay-, chairman of the North County Council, presiding. The Chairman having explained the business, the meeting resolved that the local bodies should decline to make any contribution, the opinion being freely expressed that it was most unjust to expect the Wairarapa to contribute almost as much as Wellington, while it drew next to nothing for charitable purposes. It was further resolved to request the members for Masterton and the Wairarapa to use every effort in their power to obtain severance from Wellington during the ensuing session. In conclusion, it was arranged that should the Board take legal nroceedings against any local body, a meeting should be convened by the Chairman and Mr Bunny, with a view to taking united action to resist the claim, and to send copies of the resolutions passed to the local bodies throughout the Colony. Mr Beetham, who was present, expressed his sympathy with the movement, and Mr Buchanan telegraphed to the same effect. The District Hospital Board to-day refused to entertain the application of the Greytown Hospital Trustees for £IOO, the estimated deficiency for the current year, on the ground that the application had not been received till after the 31st March. -
