The Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington for the week ending Saturday amounted to £5043 17s< Beer duty, £99 6s 9d.
George Thomas and Co. repoft produce prices as follows : —lu oats there is an increased tendency to firmness, owing to the active operations of the Australian markets, and it is now almost impossible to obtain a quotation under Is 6d for good feed at Southern ports, and Is 8d to Is 9J for prime short Canadians j local values rule from Is 10Jd to 2s Id per bushel. The Sydney demand has also agitated the ruling rates for potatoes, pollard and bran, all of which show an upward change of 53 per ton all round. There have been a few inquiries for salt butter at 6d to 6Jd for local consumption. A fair volume of business is being transacted in Italian and perennial rye and cocksfoot grass seeds. Supplies of onions greatly exceed demands, and inferior samples are almost valueless ; good dry keeping descriptions command £4 per ton. Stocks of last sea« son’s hams and bacon are almost exhausted; and we look duringthe next fortnight for first parcels of the new cure. We quote—Flour, £S 10s to £9 ; fowls’ wheat, 2s 9d to 2s JOd ; bran, 70s ; pollard, 80s ; oatmeal, £9 53 ; chaff, £3 and £4 j maize, 3s lOd ; feed barley, 2s lOd; beans, 3s 6d ; peas, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; rye grass seed, 3a 9d to 4s ; Italian ditto, 33 6’d; cocksfoot, 3Jd to 4d per lb ; potatoes, 55s ; onions, prime, £4 ; pearl barley, 21s ; split peas, 19s ; wheatmeal, £9 ; cheese, 4d to 4Jd ; fresh batter, 7d ; salt ditto, 6d to G|d; hams and bacon, 7Jd ; honey, 5d (in tins); lard, 4d ; eggs, Is 8d per doz. A run of ill-luck has followed the fruit trade during the past week, the weather having been exceedingly unsettled and stormy; prices for the rather large shipments of apples from Hobart have been on a low grade, ruling from 4s 6d to 7s per case, with very little disposition on the part of the trade to purchase largely ; prices for the usual monthly shipment of bananas, &0., from Fiji, were also affected by the temporary depression in this branch of trade. Poultry is as follows :—Fowls, 23 6d to 2a 9d ; ducks, 3s 6d; geese, 5s 6d; and turkeys, Ss per pair. Messrs Edwards and Mcßeath say of the labor market :—We cannot report much alteration since last week. There has been a fair demand, mostly for country servants. Freeman R. Jackson and Go. report on the Jobnsonville stock sale on Wednesday : The beef entered to-day was of medium quality and light weights. Prices improved on those of last sale ; tho bidding was fairly brisk throughout. The sheep penned were nearly all ewes, and made better prices. Pigs came forward. in usual numbers and maintained late rateß. Cattle. —Bullocks, £5 5s to £5 10s, average £5 Bs, or 14s to 14s Gd the lOOlbs. Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co. report :—Tho entries of sheep have been large during the past fortnight. We sold nearly all that came forward at full values. Wethers have been in good demand, and lambs are still inquired for. Our sales of tiatfcle have been better since onr last report, afid a ! thclugh the sales show no improvement in values, the demand has been brisk. Pigs are dull of sale, and at redncSd prices. We have purchasers for really first-class hacks for export. We quote :—Sheep, at WaUga.nui—Store wethers, 8s lid to9s 7d ; others, 7s 6d to 8a 6d ; fat wethers, 9s 9d ; ewes of uniform quality, 3s id to 4s. Pigs—Large pigs, 28s to 35s ; porkers, 12s to 17s.
