EDUCATION BOARD.
Tho monthly meeting of the Education Board was held in the Boarcrs office on Wednesday. Present Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), Bunny, Brown, Fraser,. Buchanan, Young, and Dr Newman, M.H.R. The balance at the bank was stated to be L 6335 15s 9d. The paysheet, amounting L 2973 9s 7d, was passed for payment. The annual report, the substance of .which will be found elsewhere, w'as read and adopted. Permission was granted to the church trustees to make certain alterations to the Courtenay-place school, providing that the attendance of the children was not interfered with. The resignation of Kathleen Bastin, assistant teacher at Te Aro school, was received and accepted 4
Leave of absence for one month was granted to Mr G. Flux, teacher of the Pauatahanui school. Miss A. Davis, who had been granted two months’ leave of absence, made an application that she should receive full pay during that time, as another teacher who had obtained leave had been allowed salary. It was decided to let the matter stand over until next meeting, and in the meantime the Secretary was instructed to make inquiries into the matter. Permission to remove timber from an old slied at the Mauriceville railway station was granted to Mr \V Blinkorn, subject to the Local Committee's approval. The Paliiatua Committee applied for funds to erect a shelter-shed, and also that the Board should pay LI per week for the purpose of conveying children from the Village Settlement to the School. It was decided chat the Inspeccor, who is about to visit the locality, should bring up a report on both matters. An application was read from the Taita Committee for a special grant of LlO in aid of capitation. It was decided that the Board had no power to grant the application. The Pauatahanui Committee asked that a new school should be erected, as the present one was in a very delapidated condition. It was decided that a committee, consisting of the Chairman, Mr Young, and Dr Newman should be appointed to visit the present school and report on the matter. Applications were received for grants to execute repairs to school residences from the Waingawa and Matarawa Committees. The Board decided to inform the applicants that they had no funds available, and the opinion was expressed that School Committees should make an effort to help themselves in such matters. It was decided that Mr Johnson, master of the Kaivvhara School, should be allowed L4O house allowance. In connection with an application made at the last meeting of the Board that the Masterton Infant School should bo removed from the Wesleyan Schoolhouse to the Temperance Hall. Mr Lee reported that the latter would be the better site. It was decided that the Secretary should ascertain what the cost of removal would be, and Mr Brown, who was about to visit Masterton, was requested to inquire into the matter and report at the next meeting. The Board then went into committee to consider appointments.
