BENEVOLENT SOCIETY TRUSTEES.

The usual weekly meeting of the Benevolent Society Trustees was held iu the Corporation buildings on Tuesday afternoon. There were present Messrs G. Allen (in the chair), S. Danks, Smith, A. Young, Edwards, and Monaghan. Leave of abseuce was granted to the chairman (Rev H. Van Staveren), who was absent iu consequence of the Jewish holidays. Rent and rations were granted to a woman who had injured one of her arms, and was thus unable to work. The Secretary’s action in granting assistance to a man who had formerly been in the Government for about 11 years, and was now in a thoroughly destitute condition, was approved; as also was his action in giving 5s to an old Civil servant who had gone up-country in search of employment. The family of a man who had been in business in Wellington, and who was now in very reduced circumstances, was relieved. It was stated that the man had only earned 6s during the last three months. The case of a woman, whose husband was continually before the Court because he refused to support her, was brought up. It was decided that rations should be granted for one week, after which it was decided that no further help should be given, as the woman had relations who were able to support her. Several other cases were dealt with, aid being granted in the most deserving ones. A subscription of £1 Is was received from Mr B. Smith. It was decided on the motion of the Chairman, that a letter should be sent to the City Council Jasking if they would put aside, independent of their ordinary stone contracts, a certain amount of metal, so that the men who now apply to the Society for assistance, and who work out the cost, should be put to work, and thus be able to provide for themselves without applying to the Benevolent Society at all. It was decided to call for tenders for annual supplies, to close on Wednesday next. The meeting then adjourned until Wednesday next.
