TELEGRAPHIC ITEMS.

(from our own correspondents.) Wanganui, March 21

At the review on Easter Monday it is expected that a fair number of country Volunteers will be present, as free passes have been granted for tho occasion. A fund is being raised here for the Norsewood sufferers. A public meeting has been called for by the Mayor to assist in raising money.

There is a probability of another football club being started here this season with the view of promoting healthy rivalry. Colonel Noake has been appointed travelling representative for the National Mutual Life Insurance office, vice Mr Lingard, promoted to Wellington. Quite a newspaper warfare has arisen out ofDudu’s disqualification by the C.J.C. for the New Zealand Cup. One writer takes the Wanganui-J.C. severely to task for allowing the stakes to be paid over to Keith, when the attention of the Secretary had been called to the fact that Keith was a defaulter at Tattersall’s, which, under the rules of racing, debarred him from running his horse or receiving the stakes when won. Westport, March 21.

A child twelve months old, the daughter of Mr Higgins, a miner at Charleston, was drowned in a mining race to-day. The deceased’s parents lost another child two years ago by a fall of eartli. The first train crossed the now Westport bridge to-day. The concert held last evening in aid of the widow of the man who was killed on the Buller road during the recent gale realised £4O.

Hickey, a local man, won the £ls handicap at Charleston sports, Hart, of Greymouth, being secondhand Craddock third. Invercargill, March 21.

Over forty applications were lodged at the Land Office Here to-day for land in different parts of the district thrown open under the provisions of the new Land Act. There was a little excitement about lodging applications for unsurveyed land, a number being ready to rush the place when the door was opened at 9 o’clock. It is thought there is some ambiguity about the clause referring to such applications, and some dissatisfaction will no doubt arise in connection therewith.
