THE VOLUNTEERS.
Captain Sommerville, the Executive Officer of tho New Zealand Rifle Association, anticipates that tho number of entries for this year’s meeting will be 350. A match between teams of the Thorndon Rifles took place on Saturday. The captain’s side won by 10 points. The scores were— Captain’s side, 229 ; lieutenant’s side, 219. Lance-Corporal A. Easton headed the sheet with 41, and Sergeant J. P. Murphy was next with 39. The men seemed very much out of practice. . A football match—productive of a large amount of amusement—was played at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon between the City Rifle corps and the Wellington Guards. The former succeeded iu winning by two tries to nil, McCulloch and Moore securing tries. Mr L. Dixon and Mr J. Johnston officiated as umpires, and Mr Whiting as referee, giving universal satisfaction.
