The Coalpit Heath Mine at Brunnerton is to be closed on and after Monday next, but most of the miners will find employment at the Wallsend Mine, who will put on a double shift. . , „ The s.s. Janet Nicoll sailed for Dunedin direct this evening with a cargo of 1000 tons coal, the largest cargo ever carried over the Grey bar. The weather is squally and light showers have fallen. Mr Petrie met with a splendid reception last night at Price and O’Connor’s camp, on the line of the Midland railway. The meeting to a man pledged itself to secure his return to Parliament. There is some revival in mining matters at Reefton. The scrip market has been more lively this last week, and prices generally have advanced. Greymouth, September 23. The programmes for the racing fixtures for both the Reefton and Greymouth Jockey Clubs’ Christmas meetings are issued. The stakes are higher than last year, and some capital sport is promised. The Coal Creek Company are calling for tenders for putting in prospecting drives in the seams on their property at Coal Creek. Election matters are at fever heat. The Coal Miners’ Union are supporting Mr Petrie, whose return is now almost a dead certainty. The weather is warm, but cloudy and wet.
