AN IMPROBABLE RUMOR.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, September 23. Considerable alarm was created by a rumor which was widely circulated that the s. s. Mararoa, which left to-day for Melbourne, was seen to be on fire off Ocean Beach. The report appears to have been started by some passengers by the southern express train, but no one can say who is the author of it. So far as it is possible to say, there appears to be no foundation for the rumor. The Mararoa took a good many passengers, and the circulation of the report caused great alarm among those who had only parted with friends and relations a few hoars before. LATER PARTICULARS. It is now quite certain that the report with regard tc the Mararoa was only an idle rumor. Cape Saunders’ lighthouse was communicated with, and the information received was that the vessel passed there all right ; while some persons living on higher portions of the city saw the steamer in safety after the rumor had been started. The electric light being displayed probably gave rise to the rumor. '
