CONSIGNEES AND LYTTELTON HARBOR BOARD.
(united press association.) Christchurch, April 27. , A meeting of the consignees of the ship Northumberland was held to-day, when the following motion was passed : —“ That in the opinion of this meeting the facts elicited in connection with the berthing and discharge of the Northumberland shows that in the harbor works the interests of the importers have been sacrificed in order to facilitate the loading of vessels at the steamers’ wharf, and that the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce be requested to confer with the Harbor Board with a view to the making of such arrangements as shall hereafter facilitate the discharge of inward cargo with the least possible expense.” The facts were that ' the vessel arrived drawing 23ft 11 in aft, which is about 2ft beyond the depth at which the harbor authorities consider it advisable to berth ships at the Gladstone pier, and the Harbormaster berthed her at the ocean steamer’s
wharf, besides which the captain of the ship desired a berth where his vessel would not' touch the ground at low water. The ship’s agent proposed when the vessel’ arrived to sort the cargo, so as to have as much of it as possible sent direct to Christchurch, without having to bear any extra charge for haulage to the Gladstone sheds, but this intention was abandoned owing, it is alleged, to the deficient rail accommodation on the wharf and to the serious delay that would have arisen to the ship in consequence. The railway authorities make an extra charge of Is per ton in terms of the tariff on all goods hauled to the Gladstone sheds for Customs examination. The traffic manager having no power to vary the same, a Committee of consignees waited upon the agents of the ship (Messrs Dalgety and Co.)* with respect to the extra haulage charge, but they firmly declined either to bear it on behalf of the captain and owners, or to make any alteration in the mode of discharging the vessel.
