Mr Flyger’s Terrace End store was burnt down at an early hour yesterday morning, and was completely destroyed. It was one of the largest and oldest stores in the town, and was a landmark. The stock was insured for £2OO in the Union and for £IOOO in the Royal; the building for £2OO in the Union and £SOO in the Royal. stack and a half unthreshed wheat stack containing about 600 bushels. A hundred bushels of threshed wheat was saved with difficulty. The machino and elevator were insured in the New Zealand office for £l5O. Patea, April 19. A store, situated in Bedford-street and owned by Mr McGuire) of Mawera, and occupied by Bensloy and Co., to be opened on the 23rd, was burned to the ground this morning at 2 o’clock. The building was of only little value, but the stock, consisting of drapery, crockery, and sewing machines, was Valued at £SOO. No insurance existed on anything so far as is known. Through the active operations of the fire brigade, ably assisted by a few of the townsmen, the fire was confined to one building. The proposal will be considered at a public meeting next week. A seven-roomed house in Cracroft-street, Parnell, belonging to the Grammar School Board, and occupied by Mr Wm. Hudson, was destroyed by fire this morning. The fire was clearly the work of an incendiary, but no trace of, the offender has been discovered. Mr Hudson’s loss is £SOO. The insurance was £240 in the North German office. Later. The fire at Parnell this morning is believed to be the work of an incendiary. It is the third time the block has been attempted to be set on fire. Greymouth, April 19. The glut in the labor market at Brunnerton and neighboring railway works which was so prevalent recently has disappeared, and all unable to find work have gradually drifted elsewhere. There are very few unemployed now, as the contractors have lately been putting on all the men they can get, as they are being kept up to time very strictly, the Company being anxious to get on as fast as possible.
