THE OPUNAKE SETTLERS AND NATIVE RENTS.
(united press association.) Hawera, April 15. A meeting of leaseholders at Opunake has passed the following resolutions]: —“The district between Stoney River and PaungataTa has suffered materially during the past 1months from depreciation of the value of cattle and dairy produce, which are its only substantial outputs; that meantime rents due to Native trustees are pressing heavily on the settlers in consequence of arbitrary action in enforcing the letter of the law against defaulting leaseholders; that the meeting considers that in the event of this course being proceeded with, widespread distress will take place in the course of a few months, and that many promising homes will be rendered vacant and settlers rained. This meeting, therefore, requests the Minister of Lands to cause the Native trustee to show the utmost leniency to the settlers.”
