RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Thursday, March 31. (Before Mr H. S. Wardell, R.M.) ASSAULT. Frederick Arnold, on remand, was charged with assaulting Eleanor O’Driscoll by biting and hitting her on the evening of last Sunday. Mr Shaw defended the accused. Eleanor G’Driscoll, on being sworn, said that at the time when the assault was committed she was in a Mrs Sutter’s house off Ghuzneestreet. Defendant came into the house saying that she (witness) was Detective Chrystal’s private spy. He then asked for a certain woman, who was not there. Defendant then committed the assault complained of. Witness blamed defendant’s mistress for starting the row in the first instance. Detective Browne said he saw the last witness shortly before the row took place, and her face was not then marked. He said she was a hard working woman, but was in the habit of taking at time a little too much beer. The defendant stated that he had been instructed by the proprietor of the house occupied by complainant to tell her to clear out. His Worship characterised the assault as being most cowardly and uncalled for, and sentenced accused to be imprisoned for three months, and to be bound over to keep the peace for four months, and to find one surety of £2O. STEALING FROM A DWELLING. James McNeal, alias McNally, and Thomas Lawson were each charged with stealing from the house of Thomas White a portmanteau containing two watches, several chains, and a quantity of wearing apparel of the value of £ls. By consent, the hearing of the case was adjourned until to-morrow.
