ONEHUNGA-TARANAKI STEAM SERVICE.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, March 10. A deputation consisting of Messrs J. Lamb (President of the Chamber of Commerce), W. Berry (New Zealand Herald), and J. D. Wickham, waited upon Mr Ballance to-day to ask him to grant a small subsidy to the steamers running between Onehunga and Taranaki to ensure punctual connection of the boats with the trains. Mr Ballance expressed himself personally as not being favorable to such a subsidy, as he said the policy of the Government was to reduce all subsidies to a minimum; but at the same time he promised to bring the matter before the Government, and to express to them the reasons advanced by the deputation for such subsidy.
