DUNEDIN MUNICIPAL FINANCES.

(united press association.) Dunedin, February 7. At the City Council to-night the Finance Committee reported that only £3200 was available for city works, which last year cost £10,204. This was mainly dne to the large contribution required for charitable aid, amounting to £3209. The Committee were of opinion that at no distant date there would have to be a special rate for charitable aid purposes, with a view of lessening the annual charge of heavy interest on overdraft. They recommended that legislative power be sought to allow money to be received on fixed deposits. The report, which provoked a long discussion, wa3 finally adopted, most of the Councillors being of opinion that a special rate for charitable aid would be unavoidable next year.
