MEETINGS.
WELLINGTON HARBOR BOARD. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Harbor Board was held last Friday afternoon. Present—Messrs E. Pearce (chairman), Dransfield, Chew, Booth, Duthie, and Petherick, Captaiu Rose, and the Mayor. ACCOUNTS. The Chairman stated that the balance at the bank on current account was £2803, and the fixed deposits £41,000. There w»< interest due, however, amounting to £2050, and he proposed that the sum of £44,000 should be re-deposlted. This was agreed to. Accounts amounting to £972 5s Bd, including £632 16s 3d for wages, were passed for payment. board’s loan. Consideration of a memo, from the Audi-tor-General in reference to the Board’s last loan, which the Auditor stated was for special purposes, was referred to the Finance Committee. ABSENT MEMBERS. The Chairman stated that as this was the fourth meeting which Mr Wheeler had been absent from it was necessary that the Board should grant him leave of absence or his seat would have to be vacated. He would move that leave be granted. Mr Dransfield thought the Union Comp£ny was already well represented on the Board, and he considered it would be as well if somebody else were elected iu Mr Wheeler’s place. Leave of absence was granted. WHARVES AND ACCODNTS COMMITTEE.
The above Committee recommended that a safe be procured for the Queen’s Wharf offices. Agreed to. WHARF AT LOWRY BAY. A letter was received from Mr H. D. Bell asking the BoardPo allow the owners of the wharf at Lowry Bay to make a charge for landing at the wharf, the amount of such charges to be expended in repairs and improvements to the wharf. The writer pointed out that at present the steamers are in the habit of landing people, who make use of the property and light fires and damage the bush. In conclusion, the writer said that if the Board refused to make thejoharge, they (the Board) could remove the wharf whenever they thought fit. The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended that the owners of the land should be permitted to make a charge of not exceeding 3d per head. Mr Booth thought they should adopt the Committee’s recommendation, and that the public would be of the same opinion. The recommendation was agreed to. NEW SHEDS. A committee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs Dransfield, Petherick, and Captain Rose, was appointed to act with the Secretary in the matter of dealing with tenders and designs for the new shed on the Queen’s Wharf. BOAT LICENSES. The Wharves and Accounts Committee forwarded a letter from D. Bowie, boat owner, urging the Board to lessen the license fee. The Committee had had a long discussion on the matter, but had no recommendation to make.
The Secretary stated that he understood there was a petition being got up in connection with the matter. INCREASE OF SALARY. An application was roceived from Mr E. O. Kreeft for an increase of salary. The Board having previously passed a resolution to the effect that notioe must be given of applications for increase of salary, consideration of the application was deferred till next meeting. CORRESPONDENCE. Two letters were received from Inspector Shearman in reference to an assertion made at the last meeting of the Board that the police would not prosecute in certain cases of cruelty to animals on the wharf. The Inspector drew the attention of the Board to the fact that the only case in which the police had declined to take proceedings was one of alleged cruelty to sheep, in which oase the evidence was not considered sufficient to sustain the charge. MESSRS PLIMMER AND REEVES* CLAIM. A letter was received ‘rom the Board’s solicitors in connection with the clasm of Messrs Plimmer and Reeves against the Board, stating that the plaintiffs had given notice of motion in Banco for the 9th of the present month, which, however, the solicitors pointed out, could not be heard till March. The Board decided to leave the matter in the solicitor’s hands. The Board then went into committee.
