THE CAMPBELL DIVORCE CASE.
REASON FOR COLONEL BUTLER’S ABSENCE. THE COERCION BILL. (SPECIAL TO SYDNEY EVENING NEWS.) (Per s.s. Zealandia at Auckland.) London, January 20. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, and Cardinal Manning, Archbishop of Westminster, have inquired into the reasons why Colonel Butler declined to present himself for examination in the Campbell divorce case. The Duke and Cardinal are satisfied with the explanation given by Colonel Butler. It is alleged that Colonel Butler had discovered that a legal gentleman, acting on behalf of Lady Colin Campbell, had obtained tbe name of a lady with whom he was involved, and threatened him with exposure. Under those circumstances he declined to attend. It is announced that Mr Gladstone and Mr Parnell have agreed to unitedly oppose any scheme of agrarian conspiracy. The Coercion Bill, to be introduced under a new name, will apply to the whole of the United Kingdom, and will be so stringent that Mr Joseph Chamberlain’s trenchant speeches may bring him under its operation.
