MEETING OF THE LAND BOARD.
The Wellington Land Board held their usual fortnightly meeting yesterday morning at the Crown Lands Office, Provincial Buildings. The following gentlemen were present—Commissioner W. A. Marchant (in the chair), Messrs H. Bunny, G. Beetham, M.H.R., W. W. McOardle, W. A. Eitzber* bert, and A. Reece. The [return of applications for Crown Lands since last meeting showed that an area of 3250 a lr and 15p had been applied for. The schedule No. 190 of land sold was read and approved. Applications to be allowed to capitalise were received and approved as follow : J. Stevenson, section 2. Block IV., Makiri, and A. H. Tirins, section 8, Block XII., Oroua. A tender was submitted from the local Land offices from, Mr W. V. Fisher for the lease for 14 years of allotments 1,3, 4, 5,6, and 10, Township of Richardson, for the Board’s approval. The tender was approved. The Commissioner stated that Mr E. Mossman, selector of section 9, Block IV., Makiri, was already a selector in the Pahiatua-Puketoi Special Settlement when the section was transferred to him, and was, therefore, ineligible to take it up. An explanation from him was read, and the Board resolved to take no action at present. An explanation was reoeived from the Pahiatua Road Board stating that the work being done on the
Makakahi-road is paid for out of general rates, and not from aoorued thirds. The Pahiatna Road Board submitted proposals for expending accrued thirds on roads in their district. With regard to the PahiatuaPuketoi Block it was decided that the Board cannot approve the proposals unless it is the wish of the selectors. Proposals to meet the wishes of any objectors should be made. With regard to the other proposals, they were approved, and it was resolved to thank the Road Board for their statement as to how the maney was spent in the past. The Commissioner stated that Messrs Girdwood and Co. had been given permission (to cut totara on Crown lands near the Mangatainoko Bridge on their paying for the timber they so cut. Approved. A letter was received from the Under-Secretary Crown Lands, stating that Crown lands along the sea coast should be offered for pastoral lease without survey, as Government cannot incur expense of surveying and planting, as [suggested by the Board. It was resolved to lease the land, as recommended by the Under-Secretary. Messrs J. and F. McDonald wrote to the Board with reference to spending accrued fourths from their small runs, Mangawhero, and proposed to hypothecate the future payments, and expend the money so raised in construction of a bridge leading to their land. The Board resolved that it has no objection, provided the local body can effect their object, and that the works are approved by the Board. With reference to Mr Meredith’s case, the Committee reported that after consideration of the case they were unable to report in Mr Meredith’s favor. Resolved to adopt the report on the motion of Mr Bunny, seconded by Mr Reese. With reference to the Mangatainoko Village Settlement, Mr MoCardle moved that this Board strongly object to the proposal to sell the lands as schemed out without reserving the area to the west of the main road for recreation purposes,, as promised by Ministers and approved, and recommended by the Board. The motion was seconded by Mr Fitzberbert and carried. Mr Beetham drew the attention of the Board t® a promise of the Minister that a new survey was to be made of the railway line through l the Pahiatua District, and proposed to- withhold all laud 1 from sale until the matter be decided. The motion was seconded by Mr MeCardle and carried. This concluded the business, and the-meet-j rag, adjourned until 12 o’clock at the Educai tixnr Board office.
