AQUATICS.
The crews which will take part in the annual pair-oared race of the Star Boating Club are as follow :—J. E. Hume and F. T. O’Neill, P. P. Webb end J. Stevenson, M. C. Barnett and S. R. Kennedy, C. Colebrook and J. E. Smith, J. King and F. Barraud, JT. A. Thomson and A. H. O’Brien
W. Copeland and E. L. Bucholz, W. H. Field and E. L. Burnes. The first heat will be rowed on the 29th instant. It is improbable that the Club will take part in the Wairau Regatta, which takes place on the 2nd March, the much vexed amatenr-oarsman question being the difficulty. Mr R. B. Smith, ex-captain of the Star Boating Club, was yesterday week presented byMrW. Fitz Gerald (captain), onbehalfof the Club, with a signet ring and field-glass,, on the occasion of his leaving this city. Mr Smith is about to take charge of the Bank of Australasia at Palmerstou North., The presentation was made in a neat little speech, and suitably responded to. The Tainui Canoe Club’s second Handicap Sailing Race came off on Saturday afternoon, the course being from the Star Boating Club sheds to. the S. R. Luhrs, off the Thomdon baths, and back. There was a fresh N.W. breeze. The following started :—Gitana, Craig, 6min ; Beeswing, Bothamley, smin ; Geroit More, Fitz Gerald, 4min; Taniwha, Williams, 2min ; Albatross, Rawson, scratch; CEnone, Harper, scratch. Beeswing won off CEnone by 4min, Geroit More being third, close behind. The second heat of the Tainui Canoe Club paddle race came off on Wednesday, the course being from the Star sheds, round the marine buoy, and back to the shed. The following canoes started : —Tuatara (Kevern), 4min 45sec ; Beeswing (Bothamley) and Taniwha. (Williams), 2min 45sec ;. Lara i min ; and Geroit Oge (Fitz Gerald),, scratch. Kevern came in first, winning from Bothamley, who was second, by lOsec, and from Williams, the third man, by 13see. FitzGerald, who was fourth, was not far behind Williams, but Harper, the last man, was out of the race.
