SPORTING NOTES.

[By Martisi.J Alpine Rose has been sold to Mr It. Hawkins, of Christchurch, for 25 guineas. The Hon. Jas. White has, so far, won LS3SO in stakes this season Bravo, by Grand Flaneur—Orphan, has been sold for a thousand guineas—it is supposed to Mr M. Loughlin, of Sheet Anchor fame. ’ Turf wonders, says “Hippona, will never cease, and we had another addition to the Ion" list in Victoria’s running at the Plumpton”Park Jockey Club meeting on Saturday last. The mare dropped a colt foal to Ingomar on the 15th of October, and three days afterwards the foal was taken from its mother and turned out with another mare,' and Victoria was at once indulged in walking exercise and the mildest of canters. On this score backers naturally would not hear of her racing in anything approaching her last, season’s form so soon after foaling, but the ..result of both the Plumpton Park Cup and. iPapatortoi Handicap' showed .that the mare never performed in public better. In the Cup, 1 must truly say that I never witnessed a mare finish in such - game and resolute style..and the whip was on her for over a quarter of a mile. Victoria s performance was the topic of conversation for the afternoon, and her brilliant running so close on foaling opens up a subject for the breeders of the thoroughbred to muse on. Such a thing has never before happened so far as I am aware, and Mr Alwell tells me that the whole thing was only done as an experiment, but he thinks the secret lies greatly in the fact that after being served, the mare was taken in and stabled at night. Previous to the Otahuhu Meeting she had never done what may be termed a For some days after his arrival m Victoria, the Cup-winner, Arsenal, refused to eat with any regularity, and also declined to lie down, At length when all hope was nearly gone, Mr Gannon hit upon the idea that the horse was lonesome ; another horse was placed near him, and Arsenal struck up an acquaintance at once, ate his feed, took proper rest and won the Cup ! The schoolmaster was abroad at Takapuna the other day. “ Phaeton ” thus recounts the story of a muddle After the conclusion of one of the races two friends who were interested in the winning horse made up the totalisator dividend, their results befog, however, unfortunately for one of them, different, as the sequel will show. One said the dividend is rather over £3 10s ; the other dissented, saying it was rather under. On working out the sum it showed £3 and 11-21 of a pound. From tl)i3 the contention waxed warm, the one championing the *• under’ offering to lay the other £5 to 1 that he was right; but the ‘ over ’ declined the wager on the grounds that he was betting on a certainty, and would not take his friend down. On ‘ under ’ repeating his offer, he was immediately taken up by one of the bystanders, and in quick succession followed another wager fiaid by the e under ’ of £4 to 1. The game was now m high play all over the course ; knots and small crowus of people, with pencils and paper, were to be seen figuring out how much 11-21 of a pound was. The ‘under’ having been fortified with the opinion of a. schoolmaster and several reputed arithmeticians that he was right, confided in a well known and portly ‘ book,’ who, meeting -the ‘ over,’ informed him that the ‘ under ’ had won his wagers. This the ‘ over ’ dissented from, hut declined to take a level fiver, and back his opinion. The party who had taken 4 to 1 being within earshot, came quickly forward, and offered to take the fiver, or any further sum the ‘ book 1 liked to lay. The * over ’ to-warn the book, - and show that as words seemed to have no effect, offered -to lay a level pound that 11-21 of a £ was more - than 10s. This the book accepted, and im-' •mediately laid a level fiver to the party who had - accepted 4 to I from the original disputant, the good intention of the ‘ over being thu3 frustrated. Shortly after this, the excitement becoming somewhat allayed, the people seemed to get their wits back, and to the chagrin of the ‘unders ’ they had to admit that they were in the wrong, and had lost their ‘ tin.’ ‘Vigilant’ in the Melbourne Sportsman speaks cf Trenton as ‘ unquestionably the greatest horse in the land ju3t now. Apropos of Trenton, the following letter appeared in a recent Sydney Mail : Sir, 7 On my return from Melbourne my attention W’as drawn to some remarks in a morning contemporary regarding Trenton. Mr Scott, the ‘ vet.,’ takes the credit of his going to the post, condemns Mr Downie, the farrier, for his lameness at Rand wick, etc., and says he (Mr Scott) ordered the shoes that made the horse go sound. Now, that is not correct. Trenton was shod to my own order, his feet never were tampered with, and the tip 3 that wero on Trenton when Mr Scott saw him were the same that he was trained in before he ran at Rand wick. . and he did the most of his work in them. When be first went lame lie had plain shoes. I tried him with bars, and, finally, tips wmch * have been using more or less these fifteen years. The three best horses 1 have trained

—namely, Kingsborough, Darebin, and Trenton —all were troubled with the same complaint; so I think Trenton would have seen the post if I had not called in Mr Scott. —Yours etc., — Thomas Lamoxd, Zetland Lodge., ■ The Melbourne ring is about to be ‘purged.’ " ■ - _ A capital field has been left in for the Auckland Cup. Looking at the handicap on paper, the best in it appears to me to be Waitiri, Fusillade, Loehiel, Scotfree, and Disowned. - Of Waitiri it is difficult to speak. She ran grpat seconds to Nelson in Auckland and in Wellington last year, but my own opinion, formed after watching her tunning is, that the mare does not like a big finish. Fusillade, the New Zealand Cup winner of la3t year, ought not to be troubled by 7st 111 b. ' Loohiel, the disappointing, is I think, the pick of the basket, and Scotfree I mention because I hear that he is a rare elinker. As to the top weight, great horse as Nelson is, I doubt his ability to beat such •a good field as this promises to be over two mile and a quarter with 93t 81b up. The gelding, 'v Tornado, winner of the Railway Stakes at the Hutt the other day, has been sold to ' Mr Leopold.’ Necklace’s legs went amiss while the mare was doing a gallop the other day, and it is said that her racing career is ended. Yatterina, Matchlock’s dam, has dropped a foal to Torpedo. ‘ CHRIS I CBURCH NOTES. Our Christchurch correspondent, ‘Fossicker,’ writes under date, Dec. 7, that owing to the exodus of sporting men from Christchurch, fit present there is little or no business doing. The Ashburton meeting—to fake place on Thursday and Friday—will create liitle'or no excitement, as the bandicappers have adopted so low a standard of weighls in the Cup as to make it impossible for owners to accept, consequently the fields published elsewhero are small. The Cup should be a moral for Spade Guinea, and the Flying for Jack. The following is ihe latent betting on the AUCKLAND CUP. There has been a little betting on the Auckland Cup since the appearance of the acceptances, and Nelson, Waitiri, and Pasha are all well backed at the undermentioned prices. They have also been supported in doublts with Disowned, Artillery, and Kinefish for the Darby, and Peter Osbeck and Belle for the Steeplechase. Quotations : 5 to 1 agst Nelson 6 1 Waitiri 6 1 Disowned 10 1 Fusillade, Loehiel,Tefcford and Pasha 12 fish 15 1 = Turquoise, Clogs, Cinderella, Friendship 25 DUNEDIN CUP. 100 8 on the field.

There was a large number of horses out on the Ellerslie course this morning. Chaafe was the first to commence proceedings by sending along Derringer and Kingfish, who accomplished two circuits at a good pace, coming home fast. Kingfish stuck to his companion throughout, and appeared to have the best of it. Nelson was sent twice round, coming home at three-quarter pace. He looks well, but is a bit light. Libeller, Silver Prince, and Lady Norah put in a strong twice round, the trio rattling home in good style and all moving freely. Cinde. rella strode three times round in an exceedingly taking manner and finished very strong. Tetford was not out, and there is every reason to believe that he is amiss. Victoria was also an absentee. Waitiri was to work after breakfast. The latest introduction into the Auckland Cup betting is Fusillade, and he has been supported at 10 to 1, while the owner of Clogs has accepted 300 to 13 about her chance. This morning 500 to 25 was booked about Pasha and Disowned for the Cup and Derby. Nelson is still favorite for the Cup at 3 to 1, Waitiri coming next at 5 to 1. For the Derby, Disowned is 4 to 2 (offered), while in the doubles on the Cup and Steeplechase Nelson is favorite pick for the first-named race, and Guy Fawkes, Belle and Silvio for the Steeplechase. , Christchurch, December 8. Chantilly, Loehiel, Moana, and Maligner have been scratched for the C. J.C. Summer Meeting. Palmerston North, December 8.
