' (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, November 24. A meeting of delegates from _ country Agricultural and Pastoral Associations was held this evening. About forty were present,, representing eleven societies. A resolution was passed that farmers should resist the charge of allowing 2£ per cent discount on grain, and that all bags be paid for or returned. Mr Carroll, the unsuccessful candidate for the Mayoralty, has announced that he intends to take steps t.o upset the election, on the ground that those whose names were placed on the supplementary roll were pot allowed to vote. , The City Council met this evening for the third time to consider the report on the gas works and" retrenchment, and fer the third time had to adjourn, owing to the want of a quorum. A large crowd of ratepayers attended, and feeling is so strong among the latter that the Mayor had to send for a policeman, but the crowd subsided, and the meeting adjourned. A majority of the City Council has again declined .to discuss retrenchment, refusing to deal with questions of importance under Mr Barnes as Mayor, t Seven Councillors went out in a body, leaving the Mayor without a quorum. - , New Plymouth, November 24. The Taranaki Agricultural Show is being held to-day. . Mr Wade, who was tossed by a bull, is reported to be improving. He is, however, not able to move his legs or arms. / : Christchurch, November 24. This afternoon the Lyttelton Harbor Board rescinded its resolution exempting ocean steamers from pilotage on the second call at one port daring the same voyage. At the sale of Crown lands "at Rakaia to-day 15 quarter-acre town sections fetched £8 10s each ; 3 roods 2 perches ,in Rakaia Village Settlement, £3®; and 1 acre 3 roods 37 perches, £2B. Westport, November 24.; ; Mr O’Conor, M.H.R., has been elected Chairman of the County Council. Auckland,' November 24. A woman named Matilda Jones has been committed for unlawfully wounding. A conference took place to-day between the Board of Education and the city. School Committees as to the best method of working the compulsory clauses of the Aet. There are 200 children waiting admission to the public schools, but there is no accommodation. The establishment of a truant school is suggested. Mr J. C. McElroy, J.P., of Mercer, was found dead on the floor of his residence. The Hon Mr Waldegrave, who has just visited Tonga, states his impression that the adherents of the Wesleyan mission, are practically subjected to Government pressure and social disabilities and persecution, and that absolute freedom for religious worship does not exist. , ‘ Blenheim, November 24. T he Marlborough Agriculf ural and Pastoral Society’s show was held to-day. The weather was fine and the attendance was good. The’number of entries was not quite up to the average,, but there; was considerable improvement in quality; especially in that of draught stock. The Caledonian Society’s annual concert this evening was a grand success.
