BREACH OF THE PRISONS ACT.

(united peess association.) Dunedin, November 18.

Samuel Collon, a man employed as stoker on an engine working at the Otago Heads, was to-day charged at the Police Court with giving tobacco to a prisoner, contrary to section 33 of the Prisons Act. The gaoler said that a quantity of tobacco had been found in possession of a prisoner, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was obtained. A censed admitted the charge. The Resident Magistrate Baid that although it was a first offence it could not be dealt with lightly, and indicted a fine of £5. A farther charge against the accused of conveying a letter from one of the prisoners was dismissed on a technical ground.
