EDUCATION BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday. Present—Messrs J. li. Blair (Chairman), H. Bunny, W. C. Buchanan, J. Young, G. V. Shannon, A. W. Brown, Rev Mr Paterson, and Dr Newman. The pay-sheet (£1902) up to the end of this month was passed for payment. The Secretary stated that the Board s credit balance was over £IOOO, but he had not got the actual figures. The Chairman reported that a communication had been received from the Department, informing the Board that its grant for the year was £4067 53 7d. The Chairman remarked that. the grants appeared to be made on the principle that to him who hath shall be given. Mr Bunny questioned whether the Department had allowed .that schools in the Wanganui district were included in the Board’s jurisdiction. The Charman said that would bo brought under their notioe.

The Inspector’s interim reports were laid on the table. Miss Treadwell’s resignation of her position at the Wadestown School was accepted. Mr C. R. Joplin was granted a year’s leave of absence, without pay, and Miss Jupp (Masterton) was granted a month without pay. Correspondence in connection with the suggested removal of an assistant teacher at Petono was read, and it was deoided to give the teacher in question three months’ notice. Miss L. Ferguson (Kilbirnie) was granted a month’s leave on pay. An application from the Greytown Committee for a bonus to Mrs Scale was not acceded to; and a similar application from the Hutt Committee on behalf of Mrs Heenan was granted. Permission was given to abridge the holidays at Pahiatna. The Masterton Committee applied for an assistant teacher. The Chairman said, the school was not entitled to an additional teacher, and the application was refused.

New boundaries wore adopted for the Tawa Flat, Hutt, and Pirinoa districts. Mrs Tam (Mount Cook Girls’ School) applied for an increase salary. Refused. A bonus was granted to Mrs Jones (Carterton).

Additions to the Hutt School, to cost £l5O or £2OO, were authorised. The Upper Hutt Committee asked for fencing, to cost about £lB. A tender of £l3 10s was accepted. Repairs asked for at Taita (£2O), were authorised.

The Dalefield Committee applied for shelter sheds. It was decided to ask the Committee for an estimate.

An application for repairs to the Parkvale residence (£2s)'was granted. The Masterton Committee applied for a gallery to the schoolroom. Referred to the Inspector. j Draining and fencing were asked for at Pahiatua. The cost was estimated to be £3O. It was decided to call for tenders for the work.
