The U.S.S. Co’s ss Waihora arrived here at 11,30 am on Sunday from Sydney, via Auckland, Sailed from Sydney on October 21st at 5 pm, and had a fine run across to Auckland, arriving there on the 27th instant at 1 am, with the notorious prisoners Caffrey and Penn ; sailed again on the 28th at noon, and after calling in at Gisborne and Napier, left the latter port on the 30th at 3 pm, and arrived as above. From East Cape to Napier had strong SE winds and head sea, thence fine weather to arrival. The Waihora sailed for Melbourne, via Southern ports, at 3 pm on Monday. The ss Tui struck on a snag as she was going down the Manawatu Biver at a little after 11 o’clock on Saturday night, and stripped all the blades off her propeller. After being repaired, she started again at 11.30 pm on Sunday, and arrived here at 8.15 am on' Monday .morning. As can be seen elsewhere, she has made her last trip. She has joined the majority. The barque G. M. Tucker, from Newcastle, arrived here about 7 o’clock on Monday evening. She anchored off the Bailway Wharf. The barque Wave Queen went on the Slip on Wednesday morning to becleaned. She was towed round by the Mana. jjj WRECK OF THE STEAMER TUI. The steamer Tui left the Queen’s Wharf for Foxton at a little after 10 o’clock on Monday night. At about a quarter past 11 she struck very heavily on a rock just under the Lighthouse, and rapidly began to fill in the forward compartment and hold. Captain Pope at once ordered the, engines to be reversed, and headed for Worser Bay in the hope of beaching,;her. This, however, was impossible, owing to the rapidity with which the water was filling into her. The boats were then lowered, and ■ the passengers and crew get safely into them, Captain Pope and Mr Forbes, the mate,-being the last to leave the steamer. The boats, one of which was in charge of the captain, and the other of Mr Watson, the engineer, got to shore without further mishap-—Mr Watson’s boat at about 1 o’clock, and the other at about halt-past 1. The shipwrecked travellers at once made for the pilot house, where they were received and treated with great kindness by Pilot Holmes. In less than a quarter of an hour after the boats left the steamer she went down bow first, and now lies in about 10 fathom* of water, with, her masts showing about 4 feet above the surface. The Tui went down in the Chaffers Passage, about half way between Barrett’s Beef and the mainland. She was going at the rate of about 10 miles an hour when she struck, and had there been a heavy sea on at the time of the accident no doubt a much greater disaster would have had to be recorded. The crew, including the captain, the mate (Mr Forbes), and the engineer (Mr Watson), numbered nine all told, and there were beside ninepassengers on board, most of whom, had turned in for the night. They had scarcely time to. put on their clothes, so rapidly didithe steamer fill.
News of the disaster was received at the New Zealand Times office just after 2 o’clock on Tuesday morning, and the stafffat once communicated with Captain Holliday, the harbormaster, and subsequently with. Captain Fisk, of, the p.s. Colleen. Captain Fisk took prompt action, and the Colleen left at about 4 o’clock for the Pilot Station, and brought the passengers and crew in to Wellington, arriving here at halfj-past 7. The names of the passengers on board at the time were as follows Mr and Mrs Odling, Mrs, S. Odling, Miss Irving, Mr A. Scott, Mr J, L. Cleland, and two, others. The Tui was built in Dunedin by Messrs Sparrow and Co. about ten years ago, and was an iron-plated, screw steamer of 55 tons. She has traded between Wellington, Wanganui, and Foxton. under the command of Captain Pope for the last nine years, and was owned by Messrs J. Joseph, C: Seager, J. and H. Barber, andi W. and J. C. Bishop. She was totally uninsured at the time of the wreck, and will consequently be a dead los3 to the owners of L 3500, which is the amount at which she was valued. At midday on Tuesday Mr Bishop, the a cent, went out in the Piakai to the scene of the wreck, taking with him diver Gough. The Huia went out a little later, and returned at about 5 o’clock. We learn that the diver reports that the steamer lies in a muddy bottom, and he was not able to find the exact locality of the damage done by the vessel striking on the reef, by which the leakage was caused. The hatches are all battened down. So long as the wind remains as it is at present there is no danger of the steamer breaking up. The only articles he brought up were a binnacle, side-lights, and a bag of crayfish, which were lying on the deck. s
SHIPPING INQUIRY'.
STRANDING OF THE JANE
DOUGLAS.
An inquiry into the circumstances attending the stranding of the Jane Douglas on Long Point, off Kapiti Island, on the 23rd instant, was held at the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon. Mr H. S. Wardell, 8.M., and Captain Grant, Nautical Assessor, occupied the Bench. M!r H. S. McKellar, Collector of Customs, conducted the inquiry. Mr McKellar stated that he had held a preliminary inquiry, and asked that the statements made by the captain and other witnesses at the inquiry might be taken as evidence. The Bench agreed to this. Captain Fraser attributed the accident to hi 3 being misled by a light on shore, which was carried by some Maoris on the island, and which betook for one usually placed in Mr Field’s house when the steamer was expected. By Mr McKellar : When the light disappeared did not take any steps to verify the position of the ship. Had no doubt that the short point or_ bluff at the south of Field’s house had shut in the light. Did not take any soundings, but the lead was ready. By the Court: When the steamer struck she was going very slowly. William
; Gear Clarke, engineer, deposed that the steamer' was going full speed astern for five minutes-' before she struck. Oscar Jarman, mate, was on deck when the steamer struck. jEEad no reason to believe that the light on shore was not Mr Field’s house. The night was hazy; George Northcote, and John. j ~e seamen, also gave evidence., Mr Wardell said that in the opinion of Captain Grant and himself, Captain Fraser had been to a certain extent the victim of misplaced confidence. He had been misled by a light, bat they considered he had no business to place so much-confidence in such a light as he expected to see on the island. The Court would not look upon the case as one of gross carelessness but Captain Fraser had been guilty of negligence in not taking other means than were taken to satisfy himself that he was in his right position, and they suspended his certificate for one month, and ordered him to pay the costs of the inquiry. NOTICES TO MARINERS. QUEEN’S TOAEF LIGHTS, WELLINGTON. The Wellington Harbor Board have given, notice- that, on and after the 7th November, - 18S6, two red; lights only will be exhibited at the end of the Queen’s Wharf instead of three as heretofore, and that the new lights will be placed 20£t apart horizontally, about the centre of the outer tee, and at a height of 38ft above high-water level.
