SPORTING NOTES.

fßx Martini.J

Onyx, the dam of Nordpnfeldt, has been sent to St. Leger this season. ‘ Phseton ’ understands that Derringer was tried with Turquoise previous to going South, and had the best of it with the son of Tubal Cain.

It is said that a Melbourne bookmaker, who was for years a resident in Dunedin and did a large betting business here, is reported to have been * struck ’ for £9OOO over Ben Bolt’s victory in the Caulfield Cup, and to have failed to come up to time on settling night. * Don’t you remember sweet Alice, Ben Bolt ?’ was the song (according to the Sportsman) with which the ring chaffingly greeted the appearance of the Ben Bolt compaissioner on every occasion on which he entered the Victorian club room up to the 16th inst. * Some of you chaps will remember Ben Bolt all your lives’ was his rejoinder recently, and as the victory of the son of Newbold has taken rather more than £IOO,OOO out of their books, Ben Bolt’s name will always be associated in the recollection of the ring men with about the most sensational betting coup ever effected in Australia. All through the chapter Ben Bolt has been steadily and heavily backed by a very powerful confederacy, who for the last month never once allowed the ring to take any liberties with his name, but the moment a point or two longer odds were offered, eagerly accepted them. They thus secured nearly L 70.000, or about two-thirds of the money in the market, for themselves. Ben Bolt’s three-year-old performances were as follow: Won Mackay Pioneer Handicap, one mile and a half, 7st 131 b, 2min 45sec; won Mackay Turf Club Handicap, two miles, Sst 21b, 3min 44see; won Bowen Turf Club Handicap ; won Bowen Members’ Cup ; won Bowen Vice-Presidents’ Cup ; won Charters Towers Jockey Club Handicap, two miles, Sst 51b, 3 min 46£sec ; wou Ravenswood Publicans’ Purse ; won Ravenswood Handicap ; won Townsville Merchants’ Cup, one mile, 12st 71b, lmin 45sec ; won Townsville Publicans’ Purse, one mile, 9st 61b, lmin 50Jsec. From the Referee’s stud news I learn that Fusillade’s dam, Wai-iti, is to visit Hornby. Take Miss visits Bandoora, Siesta and Nonsense have visited Cadogan, and Maritana has visited Hornby. Touching the Auckland totalisator rule, the secretary of the Poverty Bay Turf Club (Mr Aislabie) writes a rather pertinent letter to the Referee. An extract from it is as follows : —‘ln conclusion we would point out that if these (what we consider) unjust rules are made, that it must come to this sooner or later—either the small elub3 will give up racing altogether or band together to resist the Metropolitan Clubs. We would wish you to understand that we do not for an instant advocate such a' course, but there is no concealing the fact that there is a great deal of dissatisfaction among the smaller clubs at present, and although the idea of resisting the larger clubs may appear absurd at first sight, if it is looked into it will be seen that such a war would do a great deal of damage on both sides. For instance, if a rule were made by the small clubs (i.e. clubs not metropolitan) ‘ that no horse that has been nominated for a Metropolitan Meeting was eligible to compete at their meetings,’ it would have the effect of making owners reflect whether their cattle are good enough to nominate for the big meetings, knowing that if they fail they are excluded from the small meetings, and therefore valueless as racehorses ; and we think that if horse owners had to make such a decision a large number of horses’ names would be missing for the entries for the Cups, &c. It would also depreciate the value of yearlings, as it would not pay to give a high price for a youngster without trying for a big stake with him. If he turns out second class (and how many do owners know to their cost) his occupation is gone. This, of course, is only one side of the question. We know it would seriously affect small clubs in many ways, and although (as we said before) we do not advocate such a course, we venture to point out that, in a struggle for existence, strong measures are taken.’ It seems to me that Mr Aislabie’s argument, however much one may disagree with it,, is a strong one. It is, no doubt, a good thiug to have in each district a club to control smaller clubs ;■ and the rule passed by the A.R.C. is one that I thoroughly agree with. But if—as Mr Aislabie puts it—they were to combine to ‘ boycott ’ the Metropolitan clubs, it is just a question which would

have the best of it. In the Wellington district, for instance, the Wairarapa-Opaki and other clubs would make it very uncomfortable for the city clubs. However, there is not much fear of such an alliance j but the moral of Mr Aislabie’s remarks is a good one, and it is that Metropolitan clubs must not ride the high horse. Hawkes Bay ‘ takes the cake ’ for big dividends. A Napier writer points out that his district holds first and second place with Crummy (L 306) at Taradale, and Louie (L 259) in the Napier Handicap, 1882, while Liberty’s dividend of L 153 9s in the Handicap Hurdle Race at the late spring meeting of the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club, stands sixth on the list. Other notable dividends which have been paid in this district are LIOO 15s on Marvis for the Tradesman’s Handicap, 1SS1; L7O 10s on Forester for the last Hawkes Bay Guineas; L 67 10s on Maggie May in the Hack Race at Takapaa last year (which was won by Orwell, who, however, was barred in the totalisator) ; L4O 13s on Leonora for the Flying Handicap at the Hawkes Bay spring meeting, 1883 ; and L4O 6s on Dolly in the Hack Race at Kaikora on New Year’s Day, 1884.

The Island Bay Racing Club will hold their Summer Meeting at the end of January, The difference between the Island BayRacing Club and Mr A. Hoskins, in connection with the payment of stakes in races won by Rumour, has not yet been settled, and the stakes, in consequence, have not been paid over. A difficulty has arisen in connection with the payment of stakes for the Island BayHandicap, run at the Island Bay Racing Club’s Spring Meeting last Friday week. That race, it will be remembered, was wou by the mare Rumour, nominated in Mr A, Hoskins’ name. Mr T. H. Hill objected to the stakes being paid over, on the ground that the name of the mare’s owner had not been disclosed ; and the stewards dismissed the protest conditionally upon Mr Hoskins producing the agreement, which he alleged he held as lessee of the mare. Mr Hoskins, it appears, has not produced the agreement, and the Secretary declines to pay the stakes, over, and so the case still stands. ’ PORIRUA RACES. The weather is fine, and gives promise of its continuing so to-morrow. Much animation is being manifested in the betting market. The following is the latest betting on ths Melbourne Cup:—Trident, 5 to 1; Isonomy, 7 to 1; Meteor, 10 to 1 ; Little John, 12 to 1 ; Silvermine, 12 to 1 ; Trenton, 14 to 1 ; Commotion, 20 to 1 ; Hexham, 20 te 1 ; Sheet Anchor, 25 to I, The following horses have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup :—Affluence and Salvo.

(SPECIAL TO UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Melbourne, October 28,

A demonstration has been made against Trident for the Derby in consequence of his finishing a gallop badly this morning. He is now at 7to .4 (tkn). Maddelina 100 to 15 (tkn), Volcano 100 to 10 (off). For the Cup—Trident 100 to 15 (off), Little John and Isonomy 100 to 12 taken, Hexham, 100 to 7 (tkn), Meteor 100 to 4 (tkn). Withi these exceptions last night’s quotations are unchanged. )

Melbourne, October 28,’ Trident is now firmer than ever, 5 to Z being laid.

The following is the latest Cap betting s. —Little John, 100 to .10 (off); 100 to 7 (off); Arsenal, 100 .to 5 (tkn) y Trenton, 100 to 20 (tkn) (sic); Trident, ICO to: 15 (tkn).

Melbourne, October 29. Last night a largo commission was exe««

<>uted on Crossfire for the Derby, and she was backed to win £9OOO at 100 to 5. Meteor has been heavily backed for the Cup at 100 to 6. . - A large number of horses were out again this morning, but nothing important was done, except that Trenton spurted over a mile, finishing in lmin 51sec. Commotion •was exercised at three-quarter pace, going ■tronaly. Sheet Anchor-and Britisher have arrived from Ballarat. Both horses are very fife, and were worked at half pace. Trident and Volcano, in company, did serviceable gallops over six furlongs. Isonomy covered mile in splendid style. Hexham simply cantered and spurted. Maddelina, Lord William, Bravo, Industry, Metal, Crosshre, Arsenal, Kinafisb, Acme, and Tamarisk, were out and did good work, Melbourne, October 29. There is very little betting, only the favorites being supported. 5 to 2is offered on Trident, Maddelina 100 to 15 (off), Volcano 100 to 10 (off). For the Cup a large commission has been executed on Meteor. Trident 100 to 20 (off), Ben Bolt 100 to 12 (off), Meteor Little John and ißonomv 100 to 10 (off), Hexham 100 to 7 (off), Silvermine 100 to b (tkn), Arsenal 100 to 6 (off), Sheet Anchor, Trenton and Msllua 100 to 5 (off), Lord William, Britisher and Crossfire 100 to 4 (off), Commotion and Kingfish, 100 to 6 (tkn). Sheet Anchor and Britisher did a good gallop this afternoon. ■ Melbourne, October dl.

At Tattersall’s last night there was a very large attendance of sporting men, but the win of Trident in the Derby has not improved his position in quotations for the Cup, and 100 to 20 is offered about him in vain. It is quite possible that a longer price will be lam against him at the post. Isonomy s fine performance in the Melbourne Stakes brought him well to the front, and 7 to 1 is the best price offered against him, but backers ask for 8 to 1. Ben Bolt snd Little John, 130 to 12 (tkn), Meteor, lOOto 10 (off). Trenton has been heavily backed at 100 to 7, £IO,OOO has been taken about his chance. £7OO was taken in one hand. Malua appears to be the most in favor with the public, and 100 to / is freely taken about him. Hexhana has receded in the betting, and 100 to 5 is offered against him. A considerable amount ot money has been invested on Recall at IUU to 3.

Melbourne, November 1. The weather was nice and cool this morning for training purposes. Trenton yesterday did the best mile of the season, and this morning was sent; two miles at a moderate pace. Ben Bolt, Kingfish, Crossfare, Lancer, Bravo, Lord William, Commotion, Arsenal, Sheet Anchor, Britisher, and Recall were out and did serviceable gallops. Trident, Monte Christo, andHexhamweretreated to moderate exercise. Metal was sent a strong gallop, and finished well. Malua is in splendid condition, and compassed a mile and a half in splendid style. Kitawa did a good gallop over the Cup distance. Cyclops spurted for a mile, finishing well. At Caulfield yesterday Little John did a Bplendid performance over two miles. Silvermine and Highland Chief were, Bent a mile and a half, moving freely. In the Derby, on Saturday, when rounding the home turn, Chesham did not roll Volcano on to the rails, but the latter iiorse tripped. Trident, who was behin these two, had to pull out and go right round the horses. or . Melbourne, November 1, 10.30 p.m. Isonomy has come up with a rush, and has been backed for large amounts at 6 to 1 ; Meteor and Ben Bolt, 100 to 12 John, 100 to 10 (tkn) ; Trenton 100 to 7 (tkn): Arsenal, Sheet Anchor, Lord William, Crossfire and Hexham are weaker. The outsiders backed are Kitawa, Britisher, Jack Roach, and Bohemian. The settling over the V.R.C. Derby has been satisfactory. To-day Meteor was hacked to win several thousands at 100 to /. There was a large attendance at Tattersall s to-night. sto 1 was offered against Trident and 7to 1 against Isonomy. Other quotations same as Saturday night. (Per Manapouri, at the Bluff.) Melboukne, October 27. No horse has been doing better work at Flemington than Trenton, whose chance of winning the Melbourne Cup at time cf writing cannot be considered indifferent. Since his break down at the Sydney Metropolitan meeting, the son of Musket has improved in a wonderful degree, and as he is to be steered by Alick Robinson, who rode him in the Cup last year, not a few have pinned their faith to the only New Zealand horse likely to take part in the coming atrugale. Those who have backed him may rest certain of having a good run for their money, and his victory would be popular here. Great disappointment is felt at tne absence of Nelson from the contest. He w hacked freely when the weights appeared by the public, and had ho come over and been -well on the day Major Georges black and white would have been well supported.

After going threequarters of a mil© Chesham assumed leading position, and, entering the straight, led Trident by a length, Aglaos being third. Half way down the straight Chesham appeared to be winning easily, but Trident, under great punishment, made a gallant effort, and at the distance-post was on lever terms with the leader, and, gradually forging ahead, won by a length amid great enthusiasm. Late in the afternoon Isonomy and Boolka ran off the dead heat for the Melbourne Stakes, the former winning easily by a length and a half.

FULL PARTICULARS OF THE DERBY. (SPECIAL TO UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, October 31. The first day’s racing under the auspices of the Victorian Racing Club took place yesterday at Flemington. A strong wind was blowing, and the dust was exceedingly annoying. It is estimated that about 35,000 persons were present. His Excellency the Governor and suite were among those present. Included among the visitors were Lord and Lady Carrington from New South Wales, and the Governors of South Australia and Tasmania. The road was very largely patronised. The course was in splendid order. The Derby was of course the race which excited the most interest, and Trident’s victory was received with great enthusiasm. Hales, who rode him, received quite [an ovation, and on returning to the paddock to weigh in, was loudly cheered. The win has been a popular one among the public, aud the bookmakers have lost rather heavily, and should the speedy son of Robinson Crusoe win the Cup on Tuesday it is expected that fully one half of the bookmakers will be broken. Trident is supported to win the Cup at 100 to 30. Immediately after the race the winning horse was decorated with the blue ribbon, and Chesham, the second horse, and Volcano, Trident’s stable companion, received similar compliments. Volcano, who made the running in the interests of Trident, was severely punished and much cut about. His jockey had his breeches torn, and had a narrow escape of being hurt on the rails near the home turn. The race was very fast throughout, and the time registered is equal to that of MartiniHenry in 1883, which, up to the present, was the fastest on record for this event. The following is the report of the Victorian Derby; a sweepstakes of 25 sovs each, 5 ft., with 650 added ; second horse 100, and third 50, from stakes. Distance, one mile and a half. Hon. J. White’s Trident, Sst 101 b (Hales) 1 Mr D. Cooper’s Chesham, Bst 101 b ... 2 Mr A. P. Blackwood’s Aglaos, Bst 101 b... 3 Kingfish, First Consul, Maddelina, and Volcano also ran. Acme, Kiora, and Telephone were scratched. Betting at the post was 5 to 2 on Trident, 5 to 1 against , Maddelina, 10 to 1 against Volcano, 15 to 1 against First Consul and Chesham, 50 to 1 against Aglaos. The Btart was delayed owing to the fractiousness of First Consul and Chesham, but eventually Mr Watson .dispatched the field on very even terms, with the exception of First Consul, who was left at the post. Chesham’s colors were, however, most prominent when the flag Jell, but he soon coneeded the leading position to Volcano, Kingfish being third, and Trident fourth. Passing the stand Volcano was leading the field at a terrific pace, and was three lengths ahead of Chesham, who in turn was heading Kingfish, Maddelina, and Trident by a couple of lengths. At the bridge Volcano still had a lead of two lengths, Chesham and Trident being next, and racing neck-and-neck. At the back of the course Volcano increased his lead to four lengths from Chesham, Kingfish and Maddelina, these having supplanted Trident ; First Consul was last. At the abbattoirs the positions were the Bame, and when at the scraping sheds there was no change. Half way in the home turn Trident was apparently in trouble, and Hales roused him up, but he fell away again, and loud cries were heard that the favorite was beaten. Nearing the bend Chesham closed on Volcano, and immediately after the latter fell away beaten, and gave way to Trident. Sweeping iuto the straight, Chesham had a four lengths’ lead from Trident, and at the distance post was still ifi front. Here Hales called upon the favorite and rapidly pulled on Chesham, when a most desperate struggle ensued ; but when 100 yards from home, Trident was on even terms with Mr Cooper’s colt, and he finished with remarkable gameness a length ahead of Chesham, Aglaos (twenty lengths away), third, First Consul fourth, Kingfish fifth, Maddelina sixth, Volcano last. Time, 2min 39sec. MELBOURNE CUP. (reuter’s telegrams.) Melbourne, November 2. The following is the result of the race for the Melbourne Cup : Arsenal ... - Trenton ... Silvermine ... ••• a

Malua, Isonomy, Silvermine, Trenton, Trident, and Meteor were among the first to get away, and passing the stand for the first time Silvermine was in front, closely followed by Isonomy, Ben Bolt, Trident, Britisher, Meteor, and Trenton, the remainder being in a bunch, with the exception of Grace Darling and Little John, who brought up the rear. No material alteration took place until passing the bridge, when Trident was taken to the front, and led the field into the straight, followed by Ben Bolt, Silvermine, Malua, Trenton, and Arsenal. The lastmentioned horse had held a good position throughout the raoo. Immediately after entering the straight, amid great excitement Silvermine and Arsenal passed the favorite, and a desperate race ensued all the way down the straight, Arsenal winning by half a length from Trenton, who came with a magnificent rush toward the finish, and wrested the second position from Silvermine, who finished a good third. The following were the starters, Silver King and Kingfish having been, scratched shortly before the race :—Arsenal, Ben Boit, Bohemian, Boolka, Bravo, Britisher, Commotion, Crossfire, Cyclops, Grace Darling, Hexham, Highland Chief, Meteor, Isonomy, Jack Roach, Kitawa, Lancer, Little John, Lord Malua, Metal, Monte Christo. Myall King, Recall, Rifleshot, Sheet Anchor, Silvermine, Trenton, and Trident.

- (special to united press association.) Melbourne, November 2. The second day’s racing of the Victorian Racing Club took place at Flemington today. The weather was intensely hot, and there was scarcely any wind. It is estimated that the attendance was larger than last year, and that fully 135,000 were present. The lawn was packed, and presented a more brilliant spectacle than ever. The stands were overcrowded. His Excellency the Governor and suite, and the Governors of South Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania were also present. The win of Arsenal in the Cup, although he had been well supported by the public aud the stable, is a good one for the bookmakers. The winner was previously owned by the Hon. W. Pearson, but last yeAv was purchased by Mr W. Gannon, of Sydney. Trenton and Silvermine, which ran second and third respectfully, ran well throughout. The following is a report of the race for the Cup:— Melbourne Cup Handicap, of 30 sovs each, 10 ft. or 5 sovs only if declared before August 2nd, with 2000 sovs added ; second horse 500 sovs, and third 300 sovs out of stakes. Brown’s Highland Chief, 6st ; Mr W. Stockton’s Kingfish, 6st, also ran. Affluence, Quintin Matsep, Maddalma, Kings Own, Lesbia, Fish o’ Silver, and Menotti were scratched. Betting at the post .was 5 to 1 agst Trident, 8 to 1 Isonomy, Meteor, and Ben Bolt, 10 to 1 Little John, 12 to 1 Trenton, 14 to 1 Silvermine, 15 to 1 Arsenal, from 20 to 1 to 100 to 1 the others. A good start was effected, Trenton, Metal, Commotion, and Malua being the first away, with Silvermine, Boolka, Kitawa, Isonomy and Britisher heading the second division. Passing the carriage paddock the order was Silvermine in the lead, then Bravo, Metal, Recall, Isonomy, Meteor, Boolka, Britisher and Kitawa. As the horses swept past the stand Bravo was running neck and neck with Silvermine, Metal, Boolka, and Isonomy in cloa© attendance. AAi the river turn Hexham was taken to the front, Silvermine lying second, Little John third, Bravo and Isonomy being bandy. Hexham was still at the head of the. field as they approached the bridge, and Silvermine had dropped back sixth, having been supplanted by Boolka, Kitawa, Isonomy, and Trident. As the horses approached the straight Trident was taken to the front, followed by Silvermine, Hexham, Myall King, Crossfire,, and Ben Bolt. At the distance post Arsenal, - whose colors had been prominent throughout the race, now improved his position. When fairly in the straight Hexham fell away beaten, and left Arsenal, Trident and Silvermine at the head of affairs. The last named, at the half distance, looked, like -the winner,, but Arsenal made a grand struggle, and secured the lead, being landed a winner by a neck ; Trident fourth. Then followed Sheet Anchor, Myall King and Cross Fire. Grace Darling and Malua were the two last. Time, 3min 31seo. ~ [Arsenal is a bay horse, four years old. Arsenal was backed by the stable for £20,000, but as his gallops did not please, a lot of the money was hedged, and the remainder was won against their will. The horse had done badly at feeding, and three days before the race had fasted for twenty hours. Arsenal had been backed for the double with Ben Bolt and Trident. Arsenal goes to Sydney immediately. Altogether the win was a good one for the bookmakers, but had Trident won the ring would have been broken. The defeat of Malua, Ben Bolt, Meteor, and Hexham greatly favored them. Arsenal was bought as a yearling by the Hon Mr Pearson for £625, and was sold privately to Mr Gannon. The horse was bred in Reynold’s stable, New South Wales. Trident was out of the race two furlongs from home. His Derby punishment settled his chance, although he ran a great horse. Trenton and Silvermine also ran splendidly. _ Mr White for two years running has obtained fourth place with the Derby winner, viz., Trident and Nordenfeldt.

(united press association. ) Dunedin, November 3. None of the public here gain over Arsenal’s win, the local bookmakers never having written him.

Auckland, November 3.

Several persons have made tidy hauls here over Arsenal’s win, two or three bookmakers having written him.

The weather was dull this morning, but a good quantity of work was done before the rain came on. Maligner worked in company with First Lord, and they stretched out for more than two miles, the last part of the journey being done at racing pace. Tasman and Rubina also did fast work at the same distance. Peter Osbeek was confined to slow work, but Rose and Black, in company with Sextant, spurted half a mile dh the plough. Torrent and Longwaist came as fast as they could the last six furlongs of their work, as did Fusilade and Disowned. The three Muskets —Thunderbolt, Enfilade and Engagement cantered slowly. Cremorne and Pasha, in company, worked two miles, the son of Cadogan going well. Waitiri was confined to a steady pace in two mile work. Lochiel, Marion, and Moana put in a mile and a half fast, but the first named went very indifferently, not satisfying any of the horse-watchers. Chantilly, lair Nell Sierra, and Vinaigrette all worked, the first-named pair going four furlongs more than the last-mentioned couple, who showed good form for a mile. Ike was going flow, but Ruby and Patrician flung the ground behind them in a fast go of about a mile and a quarter. Webb’s others, viz., the Lady Florence colt Vaultress and Woodpecker, also went fast for a mile, Leon and Wairuna had a breather together, and Goodman sent Apropos and Sweet Briar the Derby distance, the last mile being negotiated as hard as they could go. Galatea went nearly as far, but the pace was only half speed. Master Agnes and Athol Daisv were companions in good strong work, and ’Deceiver performed a similar task. After breakfast most of the trainers had their young ones out spurting short distances. P. Butler’s lot were at work on his private gallop this morning. Nelson was an absentee from the course, and is reported a bit off. ... ... xr .. Mi: H. Redwood arrived from the North this morning, bringing with him five thoroughbred horses, amongst them being Alpine Rose, who is much fancied by certain people for the New Zealand Cup. Itepo is Mr Redwood’s Derby candidate, and the other three of his team are the fillies Weazel, Queen Margaret and Charity. Disowned and Lochiel are still favorites for the Metropolitan Cup ; 100 to 20 have been taken about each to-day. Christchurch, October 29. There was not a great deal of work done on the Riccarton course before breakfast this morning, as the frequent showers interfered with the trainers, but Maligner, who appears to be schoolmaster or companion-in-general to the older nags stopping at .Chokebore Lodge, went steadily along for two miles or more with Waitiri, the pace being half speed. Galatea and Derringer both worked, the former going steadily a mile and a quarter, while the latter, who was not extended beyond the filly’s pace, had an extra mile. Rubina and Hermitage, on the contrary, covered a milo and a quarter fast, but the performance did not recommend itself to lookers-on. Cremorne and Pasha s exercise was of a better character, both the

North Island nags striding out more than a> couple of miles in a most satisfactory manner. Forester was only doing long, slow work, but Forma was accompanied by Rose and Black in a half-mile spin, which was negotiated at a fair bat. Russley Marion cantered a couple of miles, and Chantilly and Fair Nell did a bit farther at rather over half speed. Sierra galloped a mile, a» did Vinaigrette, the former going fastest. Sweet Briar and Anvil did a mile’s work, the former going fairly well. First Lord did not gain frieucls after doing six furlongs at his top> speed, but the outsider Patrician went the-. Derby distance in good style. Tasman had a three mile journey with heavy clothing, and the grey steeplechaser Peter Osbeek: accompanied him part of the way, Lochiel did not show, but Moana was walk, ing about, and Mr Redwood’s lot were*, taking things easy after their voyage. Ray’s, team did not show, and the same remark: anplies to Butler’s lot. “There is no doubt as to Nelson’s indisposition. He was not out on the course? this morning, but he is said to be recovering, and it is almost a certainty lie will run. Christchurch, October 30. Nelson made his re-appearance on the course this morning, and did four miles afc. half-speed, pulling up a bit tender-footed, Tasman and Hermitage did a mile and a-half on the course itself at top, both), doing well. Derringer went two and a-half miles at a good pace. Patricius and Ruby did a good mile and three-quarters, both, going very well. Disowned, Torrent, and Longwaist did two and a-half miles on theplough, the first part of this journey at half, speed, and the last half mile fast on the--course itself. First Lord and Cremorne compassed a mile anff a quarter at top on the? course, neither going particularly well. Waitiri and Pasha had a long gallop of twoand a-half miles, the latter part of theirjourney being done at their best pace on the? course. Apropos did six furlong work, Fusilade was attended for the first mile of a two-miles gallop by Madonna, and she wasrelieved by Sweetbriar and Anvil, who ram home behind the big four-year-old. Chantilly and Fair Nell were worked on the tan* covering two aud a-half miles at good threequarter speed. Lochiel was not out, butMoana did a sweat of three miles in company with Ike. Itepo and Alpine Rose had? four and a-half miles sweat. Christchurch, November 2. The tracks were again in capital order this morning, and work was commenced atan early hour in the presence of a largenumber of spectators. Nelson and Waitiri did a capital gallop twice round the tan* completing the last circuit in lmin and pulling up well. Peter Osbeek went amile and a half fast, and Derringer did a long: slow canter on the grass, held hard all the way. Tasman, after going once round the? plough slow, was joined by Rubina, and accomplished another round fast, both horses, doing a good performance. Galatea covered: a couple of miles at good half speed, and Russley did a couple of fast miles atdifferent times, moving very strongly om both occasions. Kimberley and Wakatipm worked on the plough. Sierra went once? round the tan, finishing fast. Rose and Black and Sultan were sent a fast half-mile? on the tan, the former finishing m first. First Lord, with sweaters on, went twiceround the course proper at half pace, and completed another round faster. Crutchfield, after a slow canter, was sent a fast halfmile, running rather unkindly. St Ives and StrSwithin were cantered on the tan, and had somestarting practice. Marionmoved strongly twice round the tan. Torrent and Disown.ed covered a couple of miles at half-pace, moving; very fairly and pulling havd all the way, Madonna did slow work on the ploughItepo and Alpine Rose, with rugs on, weresent two miles and a half on the plough* the Derby colt moving better than his companion. Credulity did a smart five furlongs? on the grass. Talebearer did a couple of rounds at a useful pace, and Pasha, going better than he did on the previous occasion, did slow work on the? tan. Fog, Rocket, and Longwaist were cantered a mile, and then went once round at top speed. Fog, with a light weight up* finished in front, Rocket - moving very strongly behind him, and Longwaist all out, Chantilly and Fair Nell were sent separately twice round the tan at half pace, th©= colt moving particularly well. Tit Bitfinished two and a half miles fast, ana? walked a little stiffly. Artillery went twice round the grass, the second round at a gpodk p&CG* and finished strongly* Fusilladecovered two miles and a half on the tan? at half speed, and Moana and Ike did aslow three miles on the tan. Lochiel went twice round at a fair pace, and pulled up sound, but is quit© light enough*.. Tres Sec, Irish King, and Kingaslr did useful work, and Formo was spurted, alone on the grass. Weasel and Charity went twice round at a good threequarter speed, and Forester covered twomiles in fairly good form. Patrician and Cremorne went . 2-i miles at a good pace* finishing fast. The former held his own. throughout. ■ _ Christchurch, November d.
