HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
A meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night. Present—Messrs H. S. Wardell (in the chair), Wilson, Coombe, Cohen, F. H. Fraser, Tyson, Petherick, Berry, and Rev Mr Staveren. The Chairman stated that Mr Cemino, Bandmasterof the Garrison Band, had informed him that as the Band were raising funds for a supply of new instruments, they would discontinue playing for the Hospital funds on Sundays. The Chairman also stated that he had received a letter from Mrs Greenwood, of the Alexandra Home, with reference to the nonappropriation of the money collected for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Fund. The writer understood that some of the money was to be devoted to the Home, especially as they understood that when the money was collected at the churches it was for that purpose. He also mentioned that he had received a letter-from Archdeacon Stock on the same subject in a similar strain. The Chairman-pointed out that a resolution had been passed at a previous meeting of the Board with reference to the question, which was as follows : —That as the District Boards have only called on the Corporation for funds in support of the Hospital and Benevolent Institution, the funds at present in hand should be divided between thoße institutions, and should any other incorporated institute desire to participate in the funds it must first make a demand on the District Board for assistance. In reply to Mr Fraser, the Chairman said that a copy of the resolution had not been sent to the Home, Mr Fraser accordingly moved that a copy be forwarded to them in answer to their letter. Mr Wilson seconded the motion, and said that no objection could be made to the request, provided it was made through the proper channel. Carried. The Treasurer stated that the total amount collected up to yesterday amounted to £657 153 IOJd, of which sum £586 6s 7d had been disbursed, and the remainder had been placed in the bank, with the exception of 3s 6d, which he had received during the day. He remarked that they had every reason to be pleased with the results so far. He said he would like to see a collector appointed who would call on the wealthy people of the City *and receive annual donations. By this means they would know what they would get yearly. There were plenty of people, he said, who had not given anything because they had not been asked. What he suggested would save going over the same work every year. He mentioned that he had great hopes of the success of Hospital Saturday, the results of which be thought would bring the amount of voluntary contributions up to £IOOO. There were about 70 subscription cards out, and he had heard that about £7 had been subscribed in one establishment. He thought that they should wind up the day with an entertainment. The Rev Van Staveren was of the opinion that more money could be collected by the members of the Committee .going from hbuae to houae than by appointing a collector, as Mr -Fraser had suggested. He felt certain they would .not get the money if a. collector was appointed. A lengthy discussion took place on the subject and it was decided to let it stand over till next meeting. It was stated that the amount subscribed by the Hospital Board had reached £143 18s 9d, which amount would probably reach £2OO when the full amount was in. The Rev Van Staveren moved that any member of the Committee who should absent himself from three consecutive meetings should cease to be a member of the Committee. Seconded by Mr Tyson, and carried. Mr Fraser moved that Mr Powles be a member of the Committee. Seconded by Mr Wilson, and carried. This was all the business.
