A dying man at Jersey confessed to the murder of a farmer’s wife in 1874, for which crime the brother of the murdered woman was executed, and died protesting his 1 innocence. An-attack was made on a railway train near Portadown, Ireland, on the night of the Y 15th .of August. It was the 4.80 p.m. train from Dublin to Belfast. The attacking party, it W‘,n'd seem, concealed themselves behind some ditches, where they, lay in wait for the train. About two minutes after the train left Portadown for Lurgau, the occupants of three or four of the carriages were startled by
! a shot, and almost immediately there came a j fusillade cf eioaefi. The stooeß fell on the roofs of ti e carriages, and some of them smash-.'d the windows of a aecond * class carriage in which a number ot people were | sitting. Miss Minnie Palmer, the actress, who was travelling to Belfast to fulfil an engagement at tho Theatre Royal, had an extraordinary escape. Alter leaving Portadown, Miss Palmer eat for about a minute looking out at the cirriage window ; but as the speed began to increase, °he leaned back on the cushion, and had no sooner none so than a bullet whizzed i the oven window and passed through the glass on the other side, greatly alarming Miss Palmer and two ladies who were travelling with her. It i 3 stated that the a-tack on the t-ain has produced a bad impression iu Eugf. land, and will affect the tourist excursions to Ireland. It. is added that 80 numbers of the Midd'e Temple, London, had arranged to 1 make a tour in Ireland, but this was a banj cloned on hearing of the r.ttacK ou Mt-s Palmer’s train That attack has not only brought disgrace upon Ireland, but turned a. i large sum of money from her shores.
