COLLEGE GOVERNORS.
The ordinary meeting of the College Governors was held yesterday in the offices of the Board of Education. There were present—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), G. Fisher, H. Bunny, Dr Hector, Dr Norman, Rev J. Paterson, and Mr C. P. Powles (Secretary). A letter was received from Mrs A. de B. Brandon acknowledging, the receipt of a letter of condolence from the College Governors on the occasion of the demise of her late husband, who for so many years had occupied the position of chairman to the Board of College Governors. The Hon Treasurer (Mr J. R. Blair) announced that the credit balance of the Wellington College amounted to £lO9 5s lid after deducting outstanding accounts. The Hon Treasurer suggested that as he had been appointed chairman of the Board, it would perhaps be as well if another member of the Board was elected to the position of Treasurer. Mr Bunny remarked that if Mr Blair resigned the office of treasurer the Board would sustain a loss. He saw no reason why Mr Blair could ‘ not occupy the dual position of chairman and treasurer. Other members of the Board having expressed their desire that Mr Blair should still continue to act as treasurer, that gentleman consented to retain office. The question as to the appointment of examiners for the annual examination of the boys cropped up. Dr Hector thought that the papers used in the examination of the lads for the Civil Service examinations might be utilised, at any rate so far as the higher forms of the College were concerned, and thus » saving might be effected. Economy, he remarked, should be exercised by the Governors in the present state of their finances. After discussion, the matter of the appointment of examiners was left to a committee, who will confer with the Principal on the subject, the committee to consist of the Chairman, the Rev J. Paterson, and Dr Hector, with power to act. A letter was received from Mr Mackay relative to the question of scholarships within the gift of the Board of Governors. The Principal made a number of suggestions which were also relegated to the committee above-mentioned for their consideration. A further communication was also received from Mr Mackay, who asked the Board for a subsidy of £lO toward the publication of a College Annual. The request was complied with. The City Corporation wrote, informing the Board that the reclamation of the foreshore rights of the College had been completed. Theßoard decided toraisea mortgage of £2OOO for seven years, at 6 per cent, on theland reclaimed belonging to the College. The Board decided to recommend Mr J. H. Wallace’s handbook of the ear-Iy days of the settlement to the favorable consideration, of the masters of the College. The matter of the appointment of a drawing-master for the College and the Girls’ High School was xe- J
ferred to a committee, consisting of the Chairman, the Rev James Paterson, and Dr Newman, with power to act. The Chairman referred to the Bubject of a loan on the part of the Government for the Girls’ High School. The matter was postponed for a fortnight to enable a reply being received from the Premier in answer to a letter which had been written to Sir Robert Stout on the subject by the Chairman of the Board. The Treasurer stated that the balance to the credit of the Girls’ High School amounted to £224 6s 7d. This concluded the business.
