BANQUET TO MR ALAN SCOTT.

(DOTTED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Chbistchdboh, October 21

A banquet was given to-night to Mr Alan Scott, the Midland Bailway delegate, in the Oddfeilows’ Hall. There were 150 persons present. In the course of a speech in reply to the toast of his health, Mr Scott said the present contract —Brunner and Teiexakau—had been selected first because it was the easiest, and because the plans were all ready. The Directors had instructed him as soon as possible to make arrangement for starting work both at Springfield and Belgrove, and he had every confidence that they would be working at those two points within six months. The Directors had no desire of keeping a large area of land from settlement, but wanted to have the land made available for the settlement of small capitalists with sufficient money to start on blocks of from 50 to 100 acres. He had met with many , such people in England oßly too ready to come out here. The Company would bo prepared to sell the»' land to them at a price at which they would get good bargains. The Company wished to employ local labor as much as they could. They were bound, of pourse, to expect a fair day’s work for a fair day’s wage.
