FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

(united press association.) Christchurch, October 26,

At 5 a.m. to-day a brick building in Highstreet containing four shop 3, two empty, were gutted by fire. It belonged to Mr Joseph Wade, and was insured for £SOO in the Australian and Alliance offices. The fire began in a shop occupied by Ernest Trotter, tobacconist, whose stock was destroyed. It was insured for £IOO in the Equitable, The cause of the outbreak is unknown.

Mr A. J. White, whose furniture warehouse was saved from destruction at the fire this morning by the exertions of the Christchurch Volunteer Brigade, has sent a cheque for £SO to the funds of the brigade.
