New discoveries of caves of unexampled splendor have been made in a mine located in Orange Range, about 40 miles north of El Paso, U.S. The R.M.S. Kaikoura and TT.S.S. Co's s.s. Rotomahana both left the harbor about halfpast 5 Monday evening for Lyttelton. A good race was enJuipated between the two steamer-', as both of them were fast vessels. The Rotornahana was leading by about four lengths as they cleared the Heads, but she soon last the position and the race as well by nearly two hours So says a telegram elsewhere. Last Friday evening a compositor belonging to the New Zealand Times Office went down to the premises of Messrs Cameron and P immer, agents for Hooker’s incandescent gas, to test whether the light were suitable for type-setting. The test was a practical one, a sufficient amount of type being actually set. The result was highly satisfactory, and tha light was pronounced to be exceedingly well suited for a composing-room. The light can be seen at the premises of Messr- Cameron and Pliramer, and the firm will supply estimates of the cost of the gas-making plant. A very successful concert was held at Petone last Eriday to celebrate the openirg of the new and exceedingly well-finished hall built by Mr D. A. Douglas, of Wellington, for he Petone Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U. The occasion was also the fourth anniversary of the Lodge. ' About 500 people were present, and the ha’l was most artistically decorated. Following is the programme, from which it will be seen that the management had the assistance of a number of Wellington and local vocalists and instrumentalists :—Selection (instrumental), Herr Mosch, Messrs Hotop, Hill Bros., and Gray; song, “The Pilgrim,” Mr J. W. Hill ; song, “ A Summer Shower,” Miss Randell, encored ; song (comic), Mr Copeland, encored ; duet (violin and piano) Cavatina (Raff), Wiegenlied (Hauser), Messrs Hotop and Mosch ; song, “Molly Asthore,” Mrs Parsons, encored; soDg, “Sailing,"’ Mr Todd, encored; song (comic), Mr W. D. Lyon, encored ; selection (instrumental), Herr Mosch, MeFsra Hotop, Hill Bros., and Gray ; song, “ Thou art so near,” Mr 3 Parsons ; solo (piano), . Husarenviit, Herr Mosch ; song, “Robin Gray,’’ Miss Randell ; ballad, “ Eilv MavourneeD,” Mr J. W. Hiil, encored ; song (comic), Mr W. D. Lyon; enctred. At the conclusion of the concert the hall was cleared for dancing. Messrs Riddall, Wood, and the other members of the committee deserve great credit for the manner in which they worked to mako the concert the great success it was.
