SPORTING NOTES.

[Br Martini. J

Australian scribes are amusing themselves by discussing the possibilities of the Hon. J. White electing to win the Y.R.C. Derby with Yolcano instead of the popular and heavily-hacked Trident. The opinions expressed on the subject are various, but it seems to be pretty generally conceded that Mr White will have to stand to his best if he wins, and that Volcano is not the best. The following foalings are reported at Sylvia Park :—Ericyra (by Sledmere A talanta), colt to Ingomar or Leolinus; 'Radiance (by Fireworks—Sunshine), colt to Robinson Crusoe ; Radiant (by Robinson Crusoe—Radiance), cojt (dead) to Grand Prix ; Onyx (by Angler—Chrysolite) filly to Ingomar; Atalanta (by Dainty Ariel—Moonshine) colt to Leolinus. At Mr Walter’s stud farm : Fishgirl (by Yattendon— Fanny Fisher) has produced a colt to Ingomar. Mr Percival’s mare Satanella (by Hippocampus —Slander) a filly to The Dauphin. The steeplechaser Alaric was offered for sale recently at Messrs Hunter and Nolan’s yards, Auckland, and was knocked down to Mr J. Allwill for 97 guineas. The son of Day Dawn looked fairly well (say 3 Phaeton), but a very suspicious looking leg no doubt frightened many from competing for him. The «ood effect of a rule recently passed by Jockey Club is shown in the action of a small club in that district raising its stakes to an average of L3O. The rule is worth reprinting, and is as follows: * That, with a view of promoting legitimate racing and protecting the use of the totalisato”, this club resolves that no club in the provincial district of Auckland that sanctions the use of the totalisator shall receive a license to hold race meetings under the rules of this club that does not give at least the sum of L3O to each race advertised in its programme. .... The following were the principal winners at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting :-Hon. James White, L 2,720 10s ; Mr T. Jones, LI 140 ; Mr W. A. Long, L 705 ; Mr E. Eager, L6lB ; Mr J. R. Smith, L 585 ; Mr W. Only two finished, and the mare cantered in. Cerise and Gold, by Wilberforce-Con-tessa, won the Maiden Plate, I ja^‘ es and Newmarket Handicap at the Dubbo meeting the other day. , , , , t Coming events cast their shadows before. The Sportsman of the 6th inst had a paragraph to this effect Judging by the exceptionally large number of coupons we have received selecting Ben Bolt to wm the to Caulfield Cup, theNewbold horse is likely to start a great public favorite. The sorting and counting has not yet been completed, but something like five thousand of our readers have picked Ben Bolt as the winner of the Caulfield Cup. Mr E. J. Baldwin, a well-known racing man in America, has engaged the colored Archer, Isaac Murphy, for the ensuing racing season the retainer being 10,000 dollars, that being the largest sum ever paid to a jockey in the States. The Breeder and Sportsman has the following on the subject: —‘ But if there is a jockey living urho

deserves it at all it is Isaac Murphy. He has not a superior, if, indeed, an equal, as a rider, and is the very embodiment of honesty and integrity. The latter quality, combined with his great ability, makes him immensely popular, and his appearance in the saddle is always greeted with applause, and that of a deafening kind when one of his great finishes sends his mount to victory. Mr L. P. Tarlton, a prominent young Kentucky lawyer, and head of the Fleetwood Stable, who has known Murphy since he was a child, and who attended to the latter’s business in a legal way, in referring to him the other day, remarked “If there is any one person that would not do a dishonest act, or that can be trusted beyond a money value, it is that colored boy, Isaac Murphy. They say every man has his price, but money can’t buy that boy.” The English language could hardly put it stronger than that, and the significance of it is, it is well deserved.’

WINNING AUSTRALASIAN JOCKEYS.

Sportsman

The following record of winning jockeys this season is compiled as accurately as it is possible to be, seeing that at a number of country meetings only those jockeys’ names who are placed are given, in some instances not even that information being obtainable. Lyford’s record amongst the cross-country riders might be pointed at as a case in point. He has the splendid average of five wins out of six mounts, but he may have had many more losing mounts than the one be is credited with :

Mone Christo and Trident finished a spin over the Derby distance together, the latter moving rather stifly after his work. Islander was in splendid condition, and did the best gallop of the morning, covering eleven furlongs in 2min 3iJjec. Melbourne, October 14.

In consequence of a report that a great gallop took place at Caulfield to-day between Jim Cain and Little John, a considerable amount of money has been invested on the latter, and he has been backed down to 6 to 1. About Silvermine 4 to 1 is taken and offered, oa the strength of a gallop this morning. Inlander has been backed to win a coaple cf -thousand at 100 to 2. He is now quoted at 100 to 3. At Fiemington this morning some of the youngsters were out, and did good. work. Perhaps covered three furlongs iu 38secs. The Hon Mr White’s Aberdeen and Lara had a spin over five furlongs, finishing in lmin 6sec. Miranda and Abydos were sent the same distance, and took half a second longer. Huntingtower and Oceania were also worked together, finishing five furlongs in lmin SJiec. Melbourne, October 15.

At Tlemington slight showers fell daring the Dight, preventing any fast work being done this morning, but the weather is now clearing np. There was a largo attendance at T&ttersall's last night, and Silvermine was made a firmer favorite than ever at 100 to 30. Britisher and Little John are quoted at 8 to 1. Mentmore has been backed to win £SOOO at 100 to 3, and is now quoted at 100 to 4. Lesbia is quoted at 100 to 5, but 100 to 4 is wanted. There was a large attendance at Tattersail’s last n’ght, but little business, only the favorites meeting with support at prices already mentioned. Grca.ce Darling was backed to win £IO,OOO on the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 4. This was the only important wager booked during the evening. Melbourne, October 18.

Brighton and Doctor O’Hara, together with Jerry Jerome, are credited with winning large stakes over Ben Bolt’s victory in the Caulneld Cup. Owing to a good gallop on Saturday, 2 to 1 is freely laid about Trident for the Demy, but no money is forthcoming at the price, the bookmakers wanting. 6 to 4. Melbourne, October 15. From the appearance of the weather, it seems doubtful whether to-morrow, the Caulfield Cup Day, will be fine. The following is the latest bettiug for that event Silvermine, 7 to 2 ; Boolka, 8 to 1 ; Britisher, 9 to 1 ; Little John, 9 to 1 ; Becall, 10 to 1 ;• Ben Bolt, 12 to 1 ; St. John, 16 to 1 ; Lesbia, 20 to 1 ; The Levite, 20 to 1. (SPECIAL fro UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, October 17_. The second day’s racing of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club was held at Caulfield yesterday. The forenoon wa3 overcast and threatening, bnt no rain fell. The attendance was larger than last year, and it is estimated that fully 50,000 persons were present when the Cup was run. The number of visitors from the neighbouring colouies was larger than in any previous year. Hi 3 Excellency the Governor of New South Wales was among the visitors, and appeared to take deep interest m the proceedings. The crowd within the enclosure was so great that locomotion was almost impossible on the lawn. 1 he stand also was literally packed. By Ben' Bolt’s victory in the Cup once more _ has a brilliant coup been effected, and peroaps never in the annals of racing have matters , teen worked better by the stable. Previous

to big coming to Victoria, Ben Bolt’d placid ] performances were eleven wins, two seconds, and two thirds. All through the winner received such steady support for the Caulfield Cup as to place him first favorite, but a month ago a hostile demonstration drove him back In the betting, and 100 to 2 was offered against him. However, at Sydney Tattersali’s on 20th September, 10,000 to 800 was taken in one v* hand, and several 10,0.0 more were booked at the fsame prioe. The confidence of the public was shaken to such an extent that an offer made by Mr Oxenham, the bookmaker, on Friday . night, to lay 2000 to 800 that Beu Bolt would not get a place paesed unheeded. Ben Bolt won cleverly, though, at the distance post, it looked a hundred to one that Silvermine would win. The ring have been haid hit by Beu Bolt's victory. The following is a report of the Cup race : Catjlfield Cup Handicap, of 1500 sovs ; 10CO eova to to to the lirst horse, 300 to the second, and 200 to the third. One and ahalf miles. Mr W. Betting at the post was—Si'vermiue, 4 to 1 (agsti ; Britisher, 6 to 1 ; Boolka, 7 to 1 ; Ben Bolt and Kecall, Bto 1 ; Leabia and St John, 100 to 6 ; the others from 100 to sto 100 to 3. There was somewhat of delay at the post, caused principally by the fractiousness of Millstream. After several attempts the horses were sent away to an indifferent start, Islander beiug the first to show up, with Britisher next. At the carriage paddock St John, Zeno aud Britisher were leading and racing neck aud neck, with Ban Bolt next. As the horses left the straight Zeno was taken to the front, and here Jim Cain, who was coming fast on the outside, fed. At the end of the first half mile Zeno fell away beaten, and Boolka assumed command, with Mentmore, Kecall, Britisher, Beu Bolt, and First Consul in the order named From this positions varied frequently, and coming to the home turn the order was Bonnie Doon, in the lead ; then Britisher, The Levite, Boolka, Silvermine, Leabia, Kecall, and Ben Bolt. As they entered the straight, Fallon rushed Britisher to the front, closely followed by Silvermine. The latter, under a severe punishment, headed the Ballarat horse halfwajr down the straight, but when inside the distance post O’Brien brought Ben Bolt up the centre of the course with a terrific rush, and after a desperate struggle with the favorite secured a victory by a short neck, a long neck dividing Silvermine and Britisher ; Kecall fourth (half a neck away), Leabia fifth, St. John sixth. Time, 2min 42sec.
