CRICKET.

OPENING OF THE SEASON.

The cricket season was opened on Saturday with an Association match on the Basin between teams selected for the occasion. There were to have been two matches, but the second (between junior teams) did not eventuate in consequence of a number of the players not putting in an appearance. The match that was played, however, was a good one, and was greatly enjoyed by the spectators, of whom there were three or four hundred on the Reserve. The Midland-Hutt-Poneke team went In to bat first, and put up a total of 59 before the last wicket fell. Of this rather poor score, A. Blacklock made 25 by sterling play, keeping his wicket up for a long time, and batting neatly and careful'y. Heeuan hit hard for 9, and Lawson was credited with the same score. The most successful bowler was Gore, who has the remarkable analysis of five wickets for 8 runs. C. Dryden got five for 21, aud bawled for some time very steadily. The Wellington-Star-Phoenix eleven then went in and made 71, thus winning on the first innings by 12 runs. Motly played splendid crioket for 30, and the same may be said of Gore, who made 38. Bowling honors fell to Heenan (three for five), and Lawson (four for 18). Following are the scores : Midland, Hutt, and Poneke. A.
