RIVAL FOOTBALL CLUB’S

SPORTS.

The first annual sports in connection with the Rival Football Club came off at Newtown on Saturday afternoon in the presence of about 400 spectators. A very good programme was provided, and considerable interest was manifested in the proceedings throughout. The following are the results : Club Handicap, 100 yards.—Toomath (4 yards), 1 ; Watson (4 yards), 2 ; Hume (2 yardp, 3. About fifteen others started. Toomath succeeded in winning by about 2 yards, Time, llsec.

Place-Kicking.—L. Jordan, 3 goals, 1 ; J. Hume and Watson, 2 goals each, 2. There were thirteen other competitors. Open Handicap, 100 yards.—Saywell (5 yards), 1 ; Pyke (3 yards), 2 ; King (3 yards). 3. Monnock, P. Wynn-Williams (scratch), F. Daunt, J. Kilner (1 yard each), F. Young, and Sinclair (3 yards each), Gibbons and Galloway (2 yards), Friend (5 yards), Keefe (4 yards), also Btarted. Time, Usee. Hop-Step-and-.Tump.—J. Hume (35ft 9Jin), 1 ; Rose (31ft llin), 2. Eight others competed. Club Handicap, 2nd event, 220 yards.— Watson (5 yards), 1 ; Toomath (scratch), 2 : McCulloch (3 yards), 3. Won by about 3 yards. About twelve others started. No time taken.

Club Handicap, 440 yards.—Ross (scratch), 1 ; W. Keefe (10 yards', 2 ; Watson (10 yards), 3. Robs won by about five yards after

a very good race, beating about ten others. Time, lmin l^tec. Drop-Kicking.—Watson (140 feet 10 inches), 1 ; C. Jordan (135 feet 4 inches), 2 ; E. J. Barnett, 3. Ten others competed. Open Handicap, 440 yards.— Pvke (10 yards), 1 ; Say well (14 yards), 2 ; F. Young (10 yards), 3. Monnock, Wynn-Williams and Daunt (scratch), and Ross (11 yards), also started. This was a very good race Monnock ran splendidly till within about 30 yards from home, when he stopped. He was about four yards off Pyke, who was leading, when he stopped. Time, 51I?ec. Three-legged race.—Gillon and Toomath, 1; Watson and Greville, 2. Eight others started. Open Handicap, BSO yards.—A, Young (10 yards),!: Keefe (30 yards), 2 ; Pyke (12 yard.-), 3. Duun (40 yards) led for about 800 yards, when Young and Keefe passed him, the former winning by about eight yards. Toomath (20 yards) also started. Time, 2min 20sec. Sack Race. —E. J. Barnett, 1 ; D. Barnett, 2 ; Hill, 3. Seven others started. Open Handicap, one mile (scratch event). — Liddal, 1 ; Costal, 2 ; Blick, 3. Raven, Barker, McLean, Barr and Leighton also ran. Barr held the lead for about 260 yards, when he retired. Barker also gave up after running about 380 yard?. Starting the last round Liddal, Costal and Blick were close together, but Liddal showed the most foot, and succeeded in winning by about 10 yards. Time, smin 18£?ec. The three placed men all hail from the Wellington Beagles Club. Obstacle Race.—Rose, 1 ; W. Keefe, 2 ; E. J. Barnett, 3. Twelve others started. This race caused a great deal of amusement.

Tug-of-War. Poneke second beat the Union second ; Union first beat the Wellington Beagles ; Wellington second beat the Rivals ; Union Srst beat the Poneke second ; final heat—Union first beat the Wellington second, and won.

The cup Dreseuted by the Club for the competitor who scored most points in the Club Handicap was taken by WatsoD, with an aggregate ecore of ten points, Toomath being second, with seven. Dr Hutchinson, Messrs M. C Barnett and P. P. Webb were the jadgss ; Mr C. Bolton acted as starter ; and Mr S. Ivoha as timekeeper. Gray’d Private Band were on the ground, and added greatly to the general enjoyment of the afternoon by playing several very pretty selections.
