A TEIP ON A TOEPEDO BOAT. On Saturday morning, July 31st, at the inwitation of Messrs Yarrow and Co, a number •of our Indian and colonial visitors assembled •on the Westminster bridge.steamboat pier for the purpose of paying a visit to Messis Yarrow’s torpedo-boat works at Poplar. The were conveyed from Westminster to 'poplar in two of the 23 boats being built for ■the British Government, and on their arrival at the latter place they were conducted over ■the works, inspecting the seven or eight boats then in process of construction for the British ••and various foreign Governments, and witnessing the launching of the boat. After the ■ round of inspection had been completed, the visitors re-embarked on the two boats in which they had arrived, and in which luncheon was served. While the meal was proceeding the •vessels started for a run down the river, and on getting into clearer water their great powers of ■ speed were exhibited, the measured mile being covered in about 2min 45sec, although the tide was contrary. When a little below Erith the boats turned, and proceeded up the river to Westminster, where the guests disembarked. The highest speed hitherto recorded —24 knots, or 26.7 statute miles an hour has been achieved by one of Messrs Yarrow’s boats, the Falke, built for the Austro-Hungarian Government. Among the gentlemen present were the Lord Mayor, Captain Hixon, R.N., President of the Sydney Marine Department; Lieut.-Colonel Sir Chas.
