THE CABLE RATES
By Electric Telegraph,—Copyright.
(REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.)
Sydney, September 29. The intended increases in the charges on telegrams between Australia and New Zealand from the Ist proximo is meeting with great disfavor here, and it is probable that the Government of this Colony will be urged to join with New Zealand in renewing the subsidy iu order to secure a reduction in the tariff. Melbourne, September 29.
Communications are passing between the Governments of New South Wales and Victoria with a view to the prevention of the threatened increase of the cable tariff between Australia and New Zealand. The Victorian Government, it is understood, favors a
general contribution by the colonies 'to all the Australian cables on the basis of population. Mr Warren, Superintendent of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company at Low Heads, Tasmania, has wired to the London office of the Company, suggesting that the proposed increase of tariff be postponed for one month, to allow of further negotiations.
