CHARGE AGAINST A SOLICITOR.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, September 29,

William Peate, solicitor, of Wellington, was arrested here this morning on a warrant charging him with fraudulently converting a promissory note for £3O. Ibe promissory note which Peate is accused of appropriating, and which is not due till the 19 h October, was found on him. He states that it was given to him by Mr Allau Whitfield on 1/th September to collect. It was drawn by J, Bowern in favor of W. J. Scott, who died from an accident received on the same day Peate received the note. He states that he has arranged with Whitfield to stay proceedings, and that he told Whitfield he was going to Christchurch for a holiday perhaps to the end of the month. He was remanded to Saturday next at Wellington, and leaves by the Ohau this afternoon.
