The shipping business transacted at this port during the past four weeks has been about the same as that of the preceding month, with perhaps a little advance in the Home trade, the costal trade being about the same as last month. On the 13th August the Government ateamer Stella returned from the Chatham Islands, whither she went in search of the missing brigantine Omaha. The missing vessel was found safely at Waitangi, having been detained by bad weather. The barque Sophia R. Luhrs arrived from Newcastle on the 14th with a large cargo of coals for the Hmou Company. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’* ss lonic, 3000 tons, Com-
mander J. G. Cameron, arrived from Port Chalmers on the 16th of August. She sailed for London on Saturday, the 21st, with 5 salocn, 3 second cabin, and 11 steerage passengers on board. She also took about 22,000 carcases of frozen meat. The barque G. M. Tucker, 597 tons, Captain Wood, sailed for Newcastle on the 18th. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Rimutaka, which arrived at Port Chalmers from London, on the day on which we published four last Summary, arrived here on the 20th, and sailed for Auckland on the 24th, from which port she returned on the Ist September, and is new in port. She will leave for South next week, and sails for London on the 23rd from Lyttelton. The clipper ship Crusader belonging to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company left this port on the 24th for Auckland, and arrived there on the 30th, having experienced very heavy weather on the voyage. During the progress of a heavy gale she nearly went ashore on the coast off Taranaki. On the 22nd the New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Aorangi, 2654 tons, Commander J. Turpin, arrived from Lyttelton, and four days later took her departure for London. She had on board 17 saloon, 15 second cabin, and 52 steerage passengers, and 16,500 carcases of frozen meat. _ The barquentine May, 237 tons, Captain Robb, sailed out of the harbor bound for Cambridge Gulf, with diggers for the Kimberley goldfields, on Sunday, the 29th, making the third vessel which has left this port for the Kimberley. She took about 50 passengers, and a large cargo of produce. The May was expected to do the run across in about 26 days. The excitement in connection with the “ rush ” has somewhat subsided, owing, no doubt, to the unsatisfactory reports recently received from Cambridge Gulf, and consequently there are no boats on the berth at this port for the fields. The Brunner Coal Company’s brigantine, Eliza Firth, 143 tons, Captain Millman, with a cargo of coal, arrived from Newcastle on the 30th. On the same day the German barque, Prinz Albert, 571 tons, Captain H. Peterson, arrived from Hamburg. She was 114 days on the passage, and experienced moderate weather throughout. Her cargo so far, which consists of cement, glassware, &e., has not turned out in very good order. The China Navigation Company’s ss Whampoa, 1109 tons, Captain Hunt, from Foochow, via Auckland, put in an appearance on Saturday, the sth September. She brought a large cargo and tea and sugar, having 175 tons of the former and 350 tons of the latter for this port. The vessel presented a very clean and orderly appearance, in fact, she can be put down as one of the most cleanly kept vessels that has visited this port for some time. She sailed on the 7th for Dunedin, after which she proceeds to Sydney, thence to China. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s ss Coptic arrived at Auckland on the 3rd, after a passage of 48 days from Plymouth. She arrived here on the 7th, having 45 passengers for this port, and 741 tons cargo. On the voyage out Captain Kidley and Mr W. J. Rae (purser) were presented by the passengers with most flattering testimonials, as a mark of the appreciation extended to them. The steward of the steamer was also the recipient of a present in return for his kindness. The Coptic is expected to get away in a few days for Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, sailing from the latter port for England on the 21st. We have four sailing vessels on their way out from Home—the ship Canterbury, 101 days, and the Orari, 75 days, both from London. The Canterbury may be looked for at any moment. From Liverpool, the Marmion is 97 days at sea. No news concerning the sailing of the barque Guinevere, from Mauritius, which we mentioned in our last summary as having put into that port in a disabled condition, has been received by the local agents. The German brigantine Hansa is 115 days out from Boston, and the Herbert Black, barque, 111 days from New York. Both vessels should soon show up. There are three large steamers on their way out —the Ruapehu, 40 days ; the Tainui, 26 days ; and the Kaikoura, 12 days. The barque Himalaya, from Glasgow, via Dunedin, is 91 days out. It has been definitely decided that the American barque Chasca, which put into Sydney about five weeks ago in a leaky condition on the voyage from New York to this port after having been at sea nearly six months, will not come on to this port. Her cargo is being brought over by the Union steamers. The steamer Pelham, which went ashore at the Bluff on the 9th, broke in two on the 17th. The inquiry into the circumstances attending the disaster has been concluded, the Court finding that the wreck was caused through Captain Greager attempting to enter before daylight. His certificate has been suspended for three months, and he was ordered to pay the costs of the inquiry. Several accidents have happened to steamers trading to this port during the past month. The Union Steam Ship Company’s s.s. Waihi smashed two of the blades of her propeller while crossing the Wairau Bar, and the Tui while crossing the Manawatu Bar grounded, for an hour and a half, during which time her rudder, sternpost, and two propeller blades, were carried away. Both vessels have Bince been repaired and have resumed their usual running. While coming into a berth early one morning the s.s Maori collided with the Kiwi lying berthed at the wharf. The Kiwi’s life-boat was cut in halves, the engineroom ventilator damaged, and 7 or 8 feet of bulwarks and covering board cut clean through, by the collision. The damage has since been repaired at the cost of the owners of the Maori. A small cutter, the Day’s Bay, used in the harbor as a ballast boat went ashore on Ward’s Island, and became a total wreck. The loss was rather a severe one for her owner, Captain A. M. McGregor, who sailed her. Intelligence is to hand from the head office of the Union Steam Ship Company that the Company have decided to put the Mararoa on the intercolonial trade to resume the weekly connection between Sydney and Auckland. The whole of the Melbourne steamers, instead of each alternate one, will proceed through to Sydney, pending the Mararoa’b return. The Hauroto is to be employed in the Auckland, Sydney, and Melbourne trade, taking up the running on the Bth September. Her place in the Sydney and Cook Strait route is to be taken up by the Tekapo on Teaving Dunedin. The new steamer in course of construction at Captain Williams’ yards, Courtenay-place, is rapidly approaching completion. It is expected she will be ready for launching in about a fortnight’s time. The steamer is to be called the Mana. Various works in connection with the harbor are being pushed on. The contract for the erection of a large shed on the outer tee of the Queen’s Wharf has been commenced. The building is to be 172 feet long and 43 feet wide. A tower is to be erected on one end of the building for the convenience of the night watchman. It is expected the work will be finished by the end of next month.
