THE LATE MR ISAAC NEWTON WATT.
(UNITED PRESS ASSSOCIAIION.) New Plymouth, September 11. The Taranaki Herald referring to Mr Isaac Newton Watt’s death, aaya that that gentlemrn arrived in New Plymouth on 23rd December, 1843, in the barque Himalaya from London, and was in business here for many years as a merchant. When the new constitution was granted to New Zealand in 1853, Mr Watt was chosen as the Speaker to the first Provincial Council of Taranaki, retaining that position till end of 1856, when he joined the Provincial Executive as Provincial Secretary under the Cutfield superintendency. He retained this office till 1859, when he retired from politics. In this year the first Volunteer corps was formed, when Mr Watt was elected as the captain. He went on several expeditions with his company during the war of 1860-61, and after the truce made during the latter year, he accepted the appointment of R.M. at the Bluff, where he was for many years. He was afterwards R.M. of Dunedin. He was a married man, and had four children. —two boys and two girls.
