News to hand from Samoa, via Fiji, states that as soon as the warships left Apia Hatbor the war between King Malietoa and the rebel chief Tamasese broke out afresh. It was also reported that one of the crew of the American warship Mohican was clubbed to death by a native for aa insult offered to his wife. Tonga news from the same source states business i3at a standstill. Mr Crompton, a member of tbe New Sou'.h Wales Soudan Contingent, who was ou a tour for consumption, died at Tonga on 14th August. His Excellency the Assistant High Commissioner, left Fiji for Samoa by H.M.S. Miranda, to attend the International Conference at Apia, with a view to establishing a permanent Government. &

There is excitement in Fiji over the news from Kimberley. The schooner Zephyr is to be put on the berth for Western Au-tralia. Macin, a Fiji native, who was found guilty of brutally murdering a chief, has been hanged at Suva Gaol. The new American Consul (Mr A. St John) has arrived at Suva.

At the Supreme Court sittings at Levuka the case of the Bank of New Zealand v Wilson and Murchie was_ withdrawn at the suggestion of the Chief Justice. The action was to recover £1076 on endorsed promissory notes and interest, but was settled forVnehalf, each party paying their own costs.
