WELLINGTON EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
There was a large attendance at the meeting of this Institute on Saturday forenoon. The following new members were elected : Misses E. Brown, Elkin, Lawson, Cherrett, E. Wallace, Messrs Mowbray, Morton, Riley, Merlet, Allison. It was resolved to hold a special meeting oa the first Saturday in October to consider matters to be broughtnpat the Educational Conference to be held in Christchurch in January, 1887, and to elect delegates to that Conference. It was decided to try if a room for the meetings could be obtained in the Thorndon school, as the Board room was too small to accommodate the numbers that attend. Mr Joplin gave notice of motion that pupil teachers be allowed to become members of the Institute. Mr Horne, the Yice-President, then took the chair while the President, Mr C. Watson, 8.A., read a paper on the pupil teacher course of study. Mr Watson would encourage individual tastes by giving pupil teachers a large choice of subjects for examination. Mere standard subjects were too dry, and very poor instruments for more complete intellectual discipline. Mr Cole thought the pupil teacher system should aim at matriculation. Mr Joplin thought pupil teachers needed to go over the standard work again. Mr Mowbray thought alteration was necessary, but that more work ought not to te put on pupil teachers. He would like to see a few subjects taken year by year, these to count towards a certificate. After the discussion, a vete of thanks to Mr Watson was passed. Then Mr Riley, art instructor to the Education Board, read a paper on drawing. He reviewed the pupil teacher’s course in drawing, and explained why certain changes had been made in it. Mr Riley stroDgly condemned the struggle for passes as leading often to Inferior work, the aim being not excellent work, but simply a longer list of passes than the other schools. The discussion on this paper was postponed to the meeting to be held on the 2ad October.
