A RAILWAY TO SOUTH WELLINGTON.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, —From the peculiar formation of the site of the City of Wellington, and from neglect on the part of those who laid out its streets, it may be seen that at present the railway only reaches the northern end of the city, and that, as population increases to the southward, unless something is dono immediately to remedy the difficTulty, the inhabitants of the southern districts will be placed at great disadvantage with regard to railway travelling. At present it takes as long to come from Newtown by tram to the railway station as it does to go from there to the Hutt, and all goods have to be carried by cart at great additional expense, and with considerable delay. South Wellington already contains over 10,000 inhabitants, and future increase of the population of the City must be in that locality, and therefore the extension of the railway to the south is a matter of urgency. There is also the question of ship-building sites in its natural locality, viz., between the Patent Slip and the Kilbirnie Hotel, and \ this locality would, of course, require to be connected by rail with the general system. It is unnecessary in this letter to specify the route which should be taken. There is a choice of two, perhaps of three, routes. The present difficulty with regard to the Loan Bill offers an opportunity of placing a 3um on the estimates for the proposed work, which ought not to be neglected. An approximate estimate of the amount required might be easily arrived at.—l am, &c., July 30. South Wellington. P.S.—An illustration of the results of putting off may be seen in the hitch about Woodward-street, leading to the Terrace. Thirty years ago a few hun-
dreds would have widened this street ; now the claims for land come, I believe, to some thousands.
