The weather, which has for days been southwesterly, has to-day been very inclement. Strong squalls with rain, hail, and occasionally snow tell throughout the wh le day. la the Industrial Association this evening, it was decided to a?k Mr McMillan, M.H.R., to endeavor to induce the Government to place a sum on the Estimates for opening up the mineral country between the White Cliffs and the Acheron River.
An effort has recently been made to upset the regulation for fishing for trout, and the matter has formed the subject of an appeal to the Supreme Court. The question has excited considerable interest amongst anglers here, and to-day Mr Justice Johnston gave judgment upholding the regulation. Mr Beetham, R.M., pronounced decision in the case against the Australian Mercantile Union Insurance Company, in which a conviction had been obtained for neglecting to appoint a public officer within three months from the time of commencing business, contrary to section 15 of the Property Assessment Act, 1879. His Worship thought that the case was not one which called for a serious penalty, and that it would be met by a fine of £2O. The case is the first of the kind brought ia the Colony. Dunedin, Auznst 4. In the Divorce Court to-day, the Judge decided that the petitioner’s attendance was not required in the case of Mills v. Mills and Ferrier, and granted a decree nisi, with costs, against the co respondent. °The weather ia very cold, with heavy showers and sleet almost continuously. The Roslyn Tram Company by a large majority hs? refused to sanction the running of Sunday cars. Auckland, august 4.
Bolton, defendant in the case Williamson v. Bolton action, is a bankrupt. The liabilities are £I7OB. A general store, belonging to Mr Harry Dickson, at Mangakahia, between Dargaville and Whangarei, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morning. Over £3OO worth of stock and kauri gum was lost. The premises and stock were insured in the Union office for £2OO. The Auckland Presbytery yesterday definitely decided to grant the Rev J. M. Killen’s application to practice, law in conjunction with his work as a minister. The Rev A. McKioney was appointed Moderator of the Herebytery. The resignation of the Rev A. McLean, of Waipu, on account of ill-healtb, was accepted. At the adjourned meeting to-day the Rev Mr Somerville remarked that the Rev Mr McLean s health would have been better had he tatcen his advice and got married ; all he wanted was a wife to take care of him. (Laughter.) Mr Seth Smith, R.M., this morning dismissed a charge of rape brought against a Maori, Tairoe Repere, aged 76 years, at the instance of a half-caste widow. The hearing of the evidence occupied three days. The Magistrate did not call on the defence, but said it was the most flimsy case he had ever heard.
